Job Summary
This role is responsible for improving manufacturing operations by implementing new or improved processes and equipment that improves safety & quality, increases output and efficiencies at our three plant locations in Canada and the USA (Toronto, Nashville & Reno). This position is based out of our North American Headquarters in Ajax, ON.
Responsibilities:
- Working with Quality, Operations and Design teams, develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure consistent and reliable manufacturing processes.
- Maintain and encourage a safe work environment. Work in compliance and conform to EH&S and QMS Standards, Policies, Objectives, Impact & Aspect and Hazard and Risks
- Line balancing, TAKT time calculation and cycle time studies.
- Understand and resolve safety, quality, and process issues/bottlenecks occurring in sheet metal fabrication, welding, and assembly departments.
- Provide training and guidance to production teams on Lean principles and automation systems.
- Act as automation lead for all future automation projects in the plants.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to analyze production data, identify bottlenecks, and recommend solutions to optimize production throughput. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify opportunities for process improvement and automation in manufacturing operations.
- Design and implement automation solutions to enhance manufacturing processes, reduce manual labor, and improve overall productivity.
- Develop, implement, and manage Lean initiatives (including 5S), Value Stream Mapping, Kanban, and Kaizen events.
- Stay up to date with industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in Lean manufacturing and automation.
- Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions for manufacturing issues.
- Participates in manufacturing decision-making information using production, labor, and material costs; reviewing production schedules; estimating future requirements.
- Provide engineering support to sales including design, fabrication, and procurement.
- Maintain excellent documentation.
- Provide written and/or oral reports to management as necessary.
- Develop detailed work instructions including CAD/3D drawings, Inspection Test Procedures (ITPs) in manufacturing and assembling of complex products.
- Work with lead hands, operators, and managers to implement solutions. Ensure that the production group has a thorough understanding so that they can sustain the solutions and make further incremental changes.
- Review all process documentation (FMEA, ITP’s, control plans, work instructions) and have them updated where required and verify changes. Experience with PDCA model
- Design jigs and fixtures for assembly and welding departments.
- Identify opportunities for new equipment, tooling, new or improved methods/process, manufacturing techniques and actively support and drive these activities to conclusion.
- Prepare Capital Expenditure documents including ROI.
- Analyze existing manufacturing processes, identify inefficiencies, and propose improvements.
- Implement changes to enhance productivity, reduce waste, and increase quality.
- Oversee installation, maintenance, and upgrades of manufacturing equipment.
- Perform other related duties / support as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or industrial engineering
- Certified Lean Expert with demonstrated working knowledge of Lean implementation.
- Expertise in automation technologies such as Fiber Lasers, Punch Shear machines.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks and CAD software for designing and implementing automation solutions and factory layouts.
- Proficient in Excel and PowerPoint for data analysis and presentations
- 5+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering, with a focus on Lean Manufacturing and Automation.
- Strong hands-on working knowledge of Lean tools and techniques, such as 5S, Value Stream Mapping, and Kaizen.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Develop and ensure that quality control protocols are established and implemented.
- Work with Engineering and Logistics to ensure packaging solutions are created and enforced.
- Effective communication and teamwork abilities, with ability to compile and present business cases on capital appropriations for equipment and perform training as a subject matter expert.
- Strong project management skills and the ability to drive projects to completion, with accountability for cost and schedule.
- Actively participates in the daily accountability process.
- Responsible for effective product flow through assembly areas.

Important to note:
The incumbent will be required to be in the plant 5 days/week. The Manufacturing Engineer may be required to support afternoon shift occasionally for training and implementation of process improvements.
