Director of Finance
RPI Executive Search is pleased to be partnering with a Calgary based firm in their search for a Director of Finance. The company is a leader in specialized advisory services in support of large-scale infrastructure projects in the energy (upstream, midstream and renewables), utility transmission, transportation, and telecommunications sectors across Canada and the USA.
Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer of this private company, and leading a team of seven, the Director of Finance will plan, direct, and coordinate all accounting functions. Employing a hands-on approach, the Director will be tasked with delivering value and optimizing the business through continual improvement initiatives, leveraging a profound understanding of robust accounting and finance systems and processes. The Director of Finance will ensure timely and accurate financial reporting and compliance, efficient financial operations, and effective leadership over various financial projects involving multiple stakeholders within the organization.
The Director of Finance will regularly engage with other members of the leadership team and offer their unique perspective and experience to provide impactful solutions. In addition, they will cultivate and maintain strategic partnerships with various other stakeholders, and exercise strong team leadership. As the organization continues to grow and elevate all operations, it is vital that the Director establish and maintain appropriate policies, procedures, and priorities, and communicate progress toward agreed upon team and individual plans and objectives.
Key Responsibilities The responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to: Team Leadership & Stakeholder Relations - Leading and mentoring the accounting team, providing guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
- Establishing performance goals and objectives, conducting regular performance evaluations, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement.
- Fostering a collaborative, innovative, and inclusive work environment that encourages teamwork and open communication.
- Collaborating with senior leadership to offer financial insights and recommendations for strategic decision-making.
- Cultivating and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders, including banks, auditors, and regulatory bodies.
- Communicating financial results, trends, and forecasts to the executive team, board of directors, and other stakeholders.
Financial Accountabilities - Overseeing the accurate and timely preparation of financial statements, ensuring compliance with applicable accounting principles, regulations, and reporting standards.
- Managing the external audit process and liaising with auditors to facilitate seamless and efficient audits.
- Implementing and maintaining robust internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure adherence with financial regulations.
- Formulating and implementing financial strategies, policies, and procedures aligned with the company’s objectives and growth plans.
- Conducting financial analysis, forecasting, and budgeting to provide insights and recommendations to the executive team.
- Collaborating with department heads to develop and monitor departmental budgets and to track financial performance.
- Managing cash flow and liquidity, optimizing working capital, and ensuring sufficient funding for operations and strategic initiatives.
- Identifying and evaluating financial risks, developing risk mitigation strategies, and instituting appropriate internal controls and procedures.
- Monitoring and evaluating financial investment opportunities to provide recommendations to maximize returns while minimizing risks.
Candidate Experience Education & Experience - Accumulated twelve or more years of progressive experience in finance and / or accounting, with a minimum of five years in a leadership capacity.
- Holds a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, commerce, or a related field; an MBA is considered an asset.
- Possesses a chartered accounting designation (i.e. CPA).
- Relevant industry experience.
