Job description


The Legislative Assembly Service of Saskatchewan (LAS) provides the administration and support required for the operation of the Legislative Assembly and provides organizational continuity from one Legislature to the next. The mandate of the Legislative Library is to deliver confidential, non-partisan information services to Members of the Legislative Assembly, develop and maintain the legislative and research collection, and ensure the collections present and future accessibility to parliamentarians, the public service, and the people of Saskatchewan.

The Reference Research Assistant undertakes assigned research on a wide range of public policy related topics and synthesizes research information into subject bibliographies, fact sheets, and briefing notes for library information services.  Research topics are often multi-faceted, and assignments are subject to tight deadlines. The successful candidate will have superior organizational skills, and the ability to work independently and as a member of a team.

As the ideal candidate, you will have knowledge of the principles and practices of library science; the application of library standards and classification systems; current library technology trends; and library reference and research techniques and resources in a parliamentary library environment. You will also have superior information literacy skills and superior written and oral communication skills. Assets would include an understanding of the organization and functions of the legislative branch of government and its relationship with other branches, and an understanding of broad public policy issues.
The successful candidate will have completed a 3- or 4-year undergraduate university degree in a social, natural, applied science, or humanities discipline.  At least one year of further education in a Master of Library Science (MLS) / Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS) from an accredited program is also required.
