Job Description

We are currently recruiting for a Manager with significant experience in preparing and executing valuations for private equity investments, to join the Valuations Group within Finance, at CPP Investments. The Valuations Group, specifically within private investments has overall accountability and oversight for the quarterly valuation for all private investments at CPP Investments. The Valuations Group performs independent quarterly valuations for the following asset classes: private equity, private credit, infrastructure, sustainable energies and venture capital.

The Manager will be primarily accountable for oversight of the day-to-day valuation work, including supervising the development of new valuation models and designing key mitigating controls to manage within reasonable limits, valuation error. The role will require close collaboration across departments that may include the investment departments, investment operations, financial policy & reporting among others in order to support ongoing deliverables and strategic initiatives.

The Manager will assist with quarterly portfolio-level reporting to various stakeholders including the Valuation Committee, Board Committees and external auditors, generating insights that will enhance valuation practices. They will demonstrate the ability to assess valuation processes, develop and enhance communications to senior level audiences, and build relationships with both internal and external stakeholders. They will also have an aptitude for improving financial and risk management processes, and the ability to identify and find solutions for gaps in controls.

Role-Specific Accountabilities:

• Provide leadership and guidance in planning and executing the quarterly valuation processes and provide insightful valuation analysis to proactively identify material quarterly valuation movements
• Research, analyze, and evaluate investments within the private investment’s portfolio across different asset classes
• Work closely with investment professionals across all asset classes to execute on the quarterly valuation process and onboard new deals as well as cross functionally with other departments to ensure alignment with our vision, goals and values
• Manage external valuation process and relationships with advisors and auditors
• Stratify and analyze large data sets to identify historical performance trends, detect correlations, identify key value drivers and perform calibration
• Prepare detailed valuation reports and valuation highlights for inclusion in Valuation Committee, Audit Committee and other board level reporting
• Train, mentor, review and validate financial models prepared by junior staff
• Monitor global market events (e.g. inflation, tax reforms, natural disasters, Covid-19 pandemic and quickly design valuation sensitivities and tests to assess the impact on the portfolio on a macro-basis) and sustainability-related factors
• Network with valuation practitioners at conferences, seminars from other private equity investment managers and global sovereign wealth funds to share and collaborate ideas and expertise

Qualifications

• Undergraduate Degree in Finance, Commerce, Accounting, Economics or other related discipline
• Professional designation of CBV (Chartered Business Valuator) is a requirement
• Other professional designations such as a CFA, FRM, CPA, are considered an asset
• Minimum 8-10+ years of relevant valuation work experience in professional valuation services firms, pension funds, private equity and/or investment banking
• A strong passion and interest in working with technology to incorporate into the valuation process
• Solid understanding of how the private equity world works
• Excellent research, financial modelling, analytical and valuation skills
• Coding, programming skills, and comfortable learning new systems
• Team player with ability to deliver in a high-performance culture operating under time-sensitive deadlines
• Demonstrated ability to lead and coach a high performing team, ability to coach junior staff in modeling and financial analysis
• Strong written and verbal communication skills with high degree of professionalism and ability to present ideas in a clear and concise manner
• Willingness to actively contribute to a positive and highly effective and collaborative team culture
• Ability to foster effective working relationships across the organization
• Working experience with business intelligence tools is an asset (e.g., Tableau, etc.)
