Position Summary:
The Transportation Manager is accountable for ensuring the safe execution, monitoring and analysis of all outbound deliveries from the distribution centre to its restaurants within its designated region. In addition, this role will ensure optimized equipment utilization while driving overall cost reductions without impacting store delivery targets. The position leads and supports the transportation operations within the distribution centre’s 24-7 multi-temp environment. This role is responsible for achieving safety, delivery service and finance goals through continuous improvement initiatives, innovation and through leadership of the transportation supervisory team and professional drivers.
Position Responsibilities may include, but not limited to:
- Operations
- Administer and monitor daily dispatch functions, as well as creating and maintaining a master delivery schedule
- Develop and administer cost effective delivery schedules
- On-going driver/supervisor training, i.e. Xata, Paragon, etc.
- Responsible to ensure that department achieves operational goals (monthly, quarterly, yearly basis)
- Ensure weekly Pride (key performance indicators) reporting is complete and accurate
- Financial Responsibilities:
- Manage day-to-day operational expenditures
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and yearly financial reports detailing departmental goals, Identifying variances from budget, reasons for variances and in necessary actions needed to reduce costs
- Monitor and control variable departmental costs on daily/weekly basis
- Analyze current and future equipment Requirements and prepare business cases if needed
- Maintain statistical information of drivers, equipment, delivery schedules and service levels to monitor performance
- Leadership, Morale, Relationships and Communications
- Act as a Leader in order to achieve Martin Brower’s Goals and Objectives
- Demonstrate teamwork and maintain a positive attitude
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships across the company
- Ensure a high level of interactivity to maximize co-operation between all departments
- Communicate goals, objectives, strategies, results and plans
- Participate in training, inspection, investigation and continuous improvement programs
- Foster an environment of positive employee relations and employee involvement
- Establish and maintain a positive working relationship with the union Business Agent and Stewards
- Responsible for the safety of all employees and visitors through compliance of Martin Brower’s Health & Safety policies and provincial legislation
- Investigation of accidents and incidents to ensure all reporting is completed
- Develop and administer safe driver training programs
- Actively promote health, safety and wellness to prevent injuries and accidents
- Participate in Joint Health and Safety Committee meetings as required, as a senior management member responsible to respond to recommendations and safety issues/concerns raised
- Conduct workplace inspections, identify hazards and resolve safety related concerns.
- Ensure complete and thorough implementation of all preventative or remedial safety measures
- Ensure that all injuries, near misses and damages are properly investigated and reported according to Martin Brower procedure and standards; problem solving to identify root causes to prevent recurrences
- Ensure that department supervisors are effectively managing the Modified Work Program
- Ensure department recognizes and operates in an environmentally competent manner
- Responsible for the hiring, testing, training, and direction of department supervisors
- Responsible for the hiring of professional drivers
- Assist in the development and regular updating of training plans and ensure effective implementation and use of resources
- Create and administer work schedule for Transportation department
- Conduct performance reviews for supervisor and drivers regarding salary changes, developmental Requirements , promotions etc.
- Oversee labour relations by managing grievance procedures, discipline, employee concerns, etc., within the parameters of the collective agreement
- Ensure compliance with industry, company and sanitation standards, including making sure physical plant and transportation equipment is free from hazards and meets legislated Requirements
- Ensure the operations follow all Safe Food for Canadians Regulations (SFCR), Global Food Safety Initiative (GFSI) and Good Warehouse Practices (GWP)/Good Drivers Practices (GDP) for transport rules and regulations
- Other projects or duties as assigned
Required Skills and Experience:
- University degree / College diploma in logistics or equivalent experience
- Minimum three to five years progressive transportation management experience, with a focus on strong leadership and relationship building skills
- Experience in a high-velocity distribution environment would be a strong asset Strong work ethic
- Excellent time management skills, ability to manage multiple priorities Strong, interactive team player
- Integrative thinker and excellent problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and presentation skills (verbal and written)
- High initiative and self-motivation
- Ability to produce accurate and timely reports
- Strong knowledge of (Microsoft Office; Routing Software and Onboard Software etc.)
- This position must pass a post-offer background check
