Job description

Stedman Community Hospice is seeking a caring and compassionate Kitchen Aide to join our team. Our 10-bed residence gives people who are living with a palliative diagnosis the opportunity to live with dignity and comfort in a place that feels like home. As a member of the Stedman Hospice front line support team, this role will oversee the effective functioning of the Hospice kitchen. This role supports and coordinates the efforts of Hospice volunteers dedicated to the kitchen. The focus is on planning, maintaining and guiding the preparation of food resources so that a selection of meal options are available to patients on an ongoing basis. Term : Six-month contract position from March 18, 2024 to September 16, 2024.

Based on 25 hours per week, including evenings and weekends

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & SUCCESS CRITERIA:

Reporting to the Community and Volunteer Engagement Coordinator and working as a member of the hospice team, the Kitchen Aide will be responsible for:

• Performs all duties in accordance with the St. Joseph’s Lifecare Centre Brantford Mission, Vision, and Values and Policies and Procedures.
• Participates in selection of kitchen volunteers, schedules, and oversees one on one training/kitchen orientation.
• Maintains schedule for volunteers, ensures hour reporting is accurate and assists new volunteers with onboarding and scheduling expectations.
• Determines needs for meals, maintains grocery list to support meal plans and plans for grocery pick up.
• Plans meal rotation and delegates cooking assignments where appropriate
• Initiates scheduling opportunities with volunteers and supports meal preparation when volunteers are not available.
• Adjusts work schedule to accommodate volunteer absences as possible.
• Liases with volunteer coordinator around any volunteer concerns
• Maintains records regarding food safety as determined by Public Health and coaches/trains volunteers on hygiene/safety expectations.
• Demonstrates a collaborative approach to supporting patients and families while regularly interacting with front line staff and guiding volunteers to provide services in a supportive manner.
• Ad hoc duties as assigned.
• This position may be required to perform additional related job functions beyond this description.

QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS:

• Completion of Food Safety Certification
• Other safety and food related qualifications is an asset
• Experience working in palliative and end-of-life care setting
• Demonstrated ability to be flexible and provide supportive service
• Ability to make critical decisions while responding to competing demands
• Able to work independently and initiate positive changes
• Experience working effectively with a volunteer workforce
• Ability to perform and comprehend oral and written communication
• Demonstrates strong customer service and people skills
• Ability to work independently with minimum supervision as well as part of a staff team
• Understands patient’s and families’ right to privacy and always maintains confidentiality
• Current police records check with vulnerable sector search (issued within the past 6 months)
