Are you a strategic, entrepreneurial financial leader looking for an opportunity to work in a Saint John based, growth-oriented company? The Northrup Group is searching for a Chief Financial Officer with strong technical skills, coupled with an opportunistic approach to support strategic initiatives, while providing oversight to the finance department.

The Northrup Group is a diversified group of companies operating primarily within the real estate operations and development sectors. Their commercial operations are anchored with the Hilyard Place office complex, with a number of other buildings located in Saint John, Rothesay, Fredericton, and Moncton. Their residential sector includes four leased land home park communities as well as a modular/mini home sales operation and residential sub-division lands.
Northrup is most widely known for their successful retail portfolio, centered around the East Point Shopping development – the home of Costco, Home Depot, Sobeys, and Hampton Inn, among a number of other fashion, home décor, restaurant, and professional service tenants. The East Point development has remaining open land that continues to be developed.
As a trusted advisor and financial visionary, the CFO will collaborate with senior leadership on the group’s strategy, providing valuable financial insights and analysis to assist ownership in assessing key business decisions and growth opportunities.
Responsibilities
Reporting to, and working closely with the Owners, the CFO will play a pivotal role in the financial and operational health of the group, providing timely and accurate financial data to facilitate informed management decisions. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Direct supervision of all accounting functions; including the oversight of monthly close processes, monthly/quarterly/annual financial and management reporting and analysis, payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable and purchasing, ensuring that all processes are completed in a timely and accurate manner for the group of companies;
- Encourage and contribute to ongoing coaching, training, and development of finance staff;
- Support growth strategies and investment opportunities in line with the long-term corporate vision;
- Alongside ownership, advise, negotiate, manage, and administer contracts into which the organization may enter;
- Provide valuable financial insights and analysis to assist the Owners in decision making regarding formulating and executing on strategy;
- Identify and assess potential risks, develop risk mitigation strategies, and monitor and report on them to ensure effective management;
- Prepare financial projections and manage cashflow to support the company’s investment strategies;
- Design and implement financial processes that cater to the unique needs and operational dynamics of the organization;
- Identify opportunities to reduce costs and enhance the companies’ overall performance;
- Prepare organizational and departmental operating budgets and manage the preparation of financial forecasts, including the consideration of historical results and future assumptions;
- Support business unit managers with alignment to the overall corporate strategy and their achievement of unit goals;
- Develop and manage relationships with external advisors including financial institutions, appraisers, vendors, suppliers, and third-party consultants;
- Oversee the annual audit process; acting as the primary point of contact for the external auditors and ensuring effective year-end processes;
- Maintain a system of effective internal controls across the business;
- Work alongside external information technology advisors to maintain and enhance current and future technology solutions and supporting platforms;
- Oversee tax preparation and related matters;
- Update, develop, document, and implement necessary business policies and procedures across the organization;
- Demonstrate high degree of confidentiality and discretion regarding business operations and information gathered through the performance of assigned job responsibilities;
- Other responsibilities, as may be assigned by ownership.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Undergraduate degree in Business Administration or Commerce (or similar);
- Possession of a recognized professional accounting designation (CPA), considered a strong asset;
- Substantial (minimum 5-8+ years) experience in an increasingly progressive financial leadership role;
- Relevant experience in the property development sector, considered an asset;
- Experience supporting a dynamic, highly entrepreneurial group of companies;
- Extensive knowledge of General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and financial management procedures;
- Excellent technology skills, including advanced knowledge of Excel and financial systems (preferably Yardi);
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and negotiation skills, with the ability to liaise with a diverse group of stakeholders;
- Strong critical thinking skills with the ability to solve problems effectively and proactively;
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to motivate and continuously develop a team.
The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting ownership with the management of the business strategy and overall organizational success, playing a lead role in supporting the execution of corporate strategy. The ideal candidate will be a driven self-starter, with the ability to bring a strategic and flexible mindset to the role. They will have strong communication and collaboration skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
