Laboratory Assistant – 1 year Temporary Contract
Reports to: Supervisor, Met Lab
Location : Hamilton, ON
Job Overview

Stelco, requires a Laboratory Assistant to ensure the analytical equipment used in its’ operations provides consistently accurate results to support product testing and process feedback.
Job Responsibilities
- Oversee laboratory measurement practices including the following:
- Calibration, verification and certification of lab instruments.
- Conduct round-robin and interlaboratory studies to confirm instrument accuracy.
- Evaluation of bias, accuracy, short term and long term precision of lab instruments.
- Providing guidance to lab testers on good lab practices.
- Lab instruments to oversee will include but not be limited to:
- Optical Emission Spectrometers
- LECO Combustion analyzers
- XRF analyzers
- Milling Machines
Job Qualifications
- College Diploma/University Degree in a technical discipline such Technology, Engineering or Materials Science but preference given to Chemical or Chemistry specialization.
Job Skills and Knowledge
- Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge and experience in several of the following areas – analytical instrumentation, electronics, chemistry, quality assurance, statistics and ASTM standards relevant to the measurement and calibration of equipment noted above.
- Strong computer skills
- Good verbal/written communication and listening skills.
- Proven organizational and multi-tasking skills.
Working conditions
- A mix of office, laboratory and steel mill environments.
- Regular M-F day shift with occasional scheduled and unscheduled after-hours work as required.
