Fisheries Biologist – Whitehorse, Yukon

Metla Environmental Inc. is seeking a full time or near full time biologist for a position in Whitehorse, Yukon. MEI is a locally owned company that conducts work in northern B.C. and Yukon. The Yukon is one of Canada’s best kept secrets. Whitehorse is the vibrant fast-growing capital of Yukon with a range of services, sports and cultural activities typically found in much larger centers.

Responsibilities

MEI is seeking an intermediate/senior biologist to help lead a diverse range of consulting and long term applied fisheries projects. Duties will include extensive field work, proposal development, technical review and report writing. Salmon stock assessment and enhancement is an integral component of the services MEI provides. The candidate must be able to work independently and be capable of directing and managing technicians and other staff in the field.

This position will offer the opportunity to assume a leadership role in the management and implementation of a range of projects. The position will offer a competitive salary as well as the option of profit sharing with existing projects and newly acquired clients. This position is full time but would be suitable for a candidate that is willing to commit to working intensively for 6-8 months/year with the option of taking extended periods off in winter.

Candidates must be physically fit. While safety is of primary importance at MEI the disclosure of personal medical history is not a criterion for employment unless it may directly affect performance of duties.

Qualifications

• Minimum of a Bachelors degree in relevant discipline (biology, ecology, resource management or environmental science), or comparable education and experience
• Experience is preferred but may consider lesser qualified candidate
• Professional designation (RPBio) or working to qualify for professional designation
• Personal commitment to professional biological practice
• Ability to work for extensive periods in remote settings
• First aid with CPR component
• Experience with data management and report preparation
• Exceptional organization, communication, and time management skills
• Experience with Office365 with emphasis on excel and database management
• Experience with obtaining regulatory approvals
• Experience working with First nations and government agencies an asset.
