Civic Archaeologist

Job description

They are looking for a Civic Archaeologist who will provide professional archaeology work in all aspects of the role.

Responsibilities:

· Provide professional advice and direction in archaeological resource planning and management to operation and field staff.

· Review and provide professional advice on technical plans and studies provided by Archaeology Consultants.

· Provide input into processes, review, collects, and maintain data useful to assessing the risk of impacting an archaeological resource on city lands.

· Advise supervisor of evolving policy issues that require further attention and analysis and support work to update policies related to archaeology.

· Develop partnerships with First Nations to determine the nature of Indigenous rights and potential for infringements as it pertains to archaeological studies and/or site alterations.

· Conduct workshops and training on policies and procedures related to the work, including the development of change-find procedures.

Qualifications:

· Bachelor’s Degree in Archaeology or Anthropology, with a specialization in archaeology

· Considerable post-graduate training and related experience in archaeological resource management related to infrastructure or public works projects are preferred.

· Knowledge of the rules and regulations governing archaeology in BC, knowledge of and experience working with Indigenous peoples, specifically the Musqueam, Squamish, Tsleil-Waututh, and Kwikwetlem Frist Nations.

· Knowledge of the principles, practices, techniques, methods, and procedures applicable to projects or initiatives that relate to infrastructure, archaeology, planning, and land used and/or resource management.

· Knowledge of provincial regulatory bodies, municipal staff, and other levels of government.

· Valid BC Driver’s license.

· Eligible for Professional Membership in the British Columbia Association of Professional Archaeologists.
