Organizational Overview:
Hospice Greater Saint John is the parent company of both Bobby’s Hospice and The Hospice Shoppe. From our early beginnings in 1983, we have provided valuable palliative care and grief support to the Greater Saint John Community. Serving over 120 per year, we strive to provide hospice palliative care that celebrates life. As a local not-for-profit, we are supported by both our provincial government as well as through the generosity of our community.
Position Overview:
The Director of Nursing will join a collaborative team working towards shared organizational goals. Reporting to the CEO and working under the guidance of the Medical Director; the Director of Nursing is responsible for the daily operations of all clinical departments and programs. This leadership role will require overlapping responsibilities such as the delivery of patient care, policy and safety compliance, staff supervision, human resource management, among others.
Roles and Responsibilities Overview:
Clinical Care
- Primary leader responsible for the execution of hospice palliative care services.
- Oversight of the clinical team including scheduling, chart auditing and staff management.
- Ensure all members of the Clinical team are meeting organizational standards of care, compassion and adhering to all nursing standards and organizational policies.
- Provide leadership to all clinical services and programs, including nursing services, music therapy, food and volunteer services.
- Work collaboratively with the Medical Director, Clinical Resource Lead, Social Work, and Extra-Mural to ensure admission standards are met and properly triaged.
- Manage any escalated patient or family concerns regarding the delivery of care, organizational safety, environmental concerns, etc.
- Completion of regular medical rounds and regular support of the Quality Care Committee, Maritime Hospice Network, Hospice Greater Saint John Leadership Team, and the Hospice of Greater Saint John Board of Directors.
- Be prepared to work in an active nursing rotation as needed to support staffing requirements.
Human Resource Management
- Responsible to recruit, screen and hire clinical staff as necessary.
- Facilitate annual employee evaluations, professional improvement plans and manage any staff related conflicts.
- Co-ordinate continuing education for clinical staff.
- Daily coaching and mentoring of clinical team.
Other Responsibilities
- Oversee the Clinical budget in consultation with the CEO and Finance Manager.
- Sit on Joint Health & Safety committee and provide on-going input regarding organizational safety.
- Represent Hospice at select public events and be able to speak on behalf of the organization when called upon.
- Maintain a clinical culture that is supportive of growth and development and motivates staff and volunteers to reach their full potential.
- Ensure the clinical floor remains warm, welcoming, and home-like for each patient and their families.
Qualifications:
- Must possess a BN or BScN and currently a Registered Nurse in the Province of NB.
- 5+ years of experience in clinical management.
- Experience in the delivery of palliative or hospice care.
- Hospice Palliative Care Certification with the Canadian Nurses Association considered an asset; or requirement to pursue, if not yet in possession of.
- 5+ years experience leading a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to demonstrate a working knowledge of Canadian hospice palliative care standards.
- Experience managing a non-union environment considered an asset.
- Knowledge of the not-for-profit sector and ability to identify the mission and values of Hospice care to a community of stakeholders.
- Be a dynamic leader capable of motivating a diverse team of professionals.
- Experience in budget management, report preparation and maintenance of internal policy development.
- Have a patient-centered approach to the delivery of quality care.
Salary and Compensation:
- Starting salary range - $85,000 - $90,000/year
