Position Overview:
This position will assist in the day-to-day tasks for the engineering department. The incumbent will provide support by assisting the team during the peak construction, development, and lot grading season. They will be provided the opportunity to work with engineering/technical professionals who will support the student’s development through coaching and mentoring assignments, and work in a collaborative and high-performing team environment.
This is a full-time temporary position during the summer.
Responsibilities:
1. Land Development
• Assist in the day-to-day inspections for land development construction projects.
• Assist in weekly monitoring of Erosion and Sedimentation Control practices.
• Assist with Construction Completion and Final Acceptance inspections.
• Assist with drawing reviews as required.
• Attend project site meetings as required.
2. Lot Grading, Inspections, and Survey
• Assist in lot grade inspections and make recommendation on how to correct failed lot grades.
• Assist with new development permit reviews.
• Operate survey equipment.
• Contributes to the processing of survey data.
• Performs survey tasks required to confirm lot grade.
• Set out stakes and markers to initiate survey activity.
3. Civil Engineering Project Records, Logs, Inventories, and Reporting
• Provide input and produce engineering reports.
• General CADD work and standard review.
• Contributes to the collection, processing, and interpretation of technical data related to civil engineering projects.
• Complete asset inspections like sidewalk and trail condition assessments, and survey locations.
4. Capital Projects
• Assist in the day-to-day inspections for the capital construction projects.
• Assist with the communications to the residents and businesses impacted by construction.
5. Other Duties
• Understand and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
• Contribute to a positive safety culture by always acting in a safe manner and complying with City safety policies for staff and contractors.
• Act as a steward of the City's Corporate Culture by following the values we live by.
• Perform other job-related duties as required.
Qualifications:
• Be enrolled in related Engineering Degree program with 2 years completed.
• General knowledge of land development theory and practices.
• Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools required for the construction of municipal infrastructure.
• Reading and interpreting engineering plans and specifications.
• Operate survey equipment such as GPS, rod/level and electronic distance measuring equipment.
• Good analytical and problem-solving skills, with an inquisitive attitude towards work.
• Ability to prioritize and perform routine tasks and assignments, under close supervision or under clearly defined procedures.
• Ability to communicate and interact well both inside and outside the team to explain activities.
• Good organizational skills and highly committed to meeting deadlines.
• Ability to participate in, and contribute to, a productive and collaborative team environment.
• Strong attention to detail, and ability to balance competing priorities and tasks is required.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
