The Professional Development Specialist (PDS) reports to the Office of the Fire Chief and is responsible for providing career development, coaching and assistance to all employees. Working closely with senior management, the PDS provides best practices, direction and guidance on matters including in-house promotions and transfers.
Position Summary
- Provide coaching and career advice to employees in areas such as promotion routines, developmental plans and performance reviews;
- Provide coaching and support to supervisors in the areas of performance management and leadership; create individualized learning and development plans
- Ensure that the FFD processes for Performance Management, Employee Development, Diversity Recruitment, Employee Selection and Engagement are meeting the changing needs of the organization;
- Researching, planning, designing/developing, coordinating, delivering, scheduling, resourcing, monitoring, recording, and advising on training and learning needs for the FFD;
- Coordinate, organize and/or participate in the FFD Hiring Process and promotional competitions, in conjunction with Human Resources;
- Produce a FFD Strategic Human Resource Plan around recruitment, performance management, professional development, succession planning and diversity;
- Monitor and coordinate certifications, remedial training needs, and continuous learning and development; and
- Liaise with other agencies and service providers to coordinate training from external sources.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in adult education.
- Additional training or certification in career coaching, counseling or related areas;
- At least 5 years’ experience in career management, employee training and development is required;
- In-depth knowledge of Fire Service industry professional and training standards; and
- Familiarity with Fire Service Culture.
