The successful candidate must be located near a Canadian Blood Services site and will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities. Currently, employees are expected to have an in-person presence for at least 40% of their work time. This requirement may vary depending upon circumstances.

About the role
Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Regular Full-time Developer – Software I to join our dynamic IT External Customer Experience team.

The IT External Customer Experience team is responsible for day-to-day software application support and planning. This includes researching, analyzing, defining, recommending, developing/configuring, testing, implementing, and supporting IT Business Solutions for Canadian Blood Services in collaboration with client groups and in accordance with regulatory requirements. 

 

In this role, you will work with IT team members and business partners to engineer, design, and develop solutions for new software development projects and/or requests, as well as provide technical expertise on creative and innovative solutions. You will utilize analytical skills to develop new features, as well as enhance existing features, and frameworks, and troubleshoot problems. Your areas of responsibility will include, but are not limited to, requirements (use case) gathering/analysis, design and functional specification creation, software development including producing prototypes and bug fixes, system test case creation/execution, participating in software design/code reviews and providing design support, based upon management goals and objectives, to achieve results that are sustainable and repeatable.

Formula for success

• Harnessing your skills in business systems analysis, you will work closely with business systems analysts, other members of the department, peer IT groups, and business partners in the assessment of requirements; functional and non-functional.
• Applying your collaborative abilities, you will collaborate with various groups to design and develop innovative solutions.
• Employing your problem-solving abilities, you will determine and aid others in determining practical solutions.
• Utilizing your software development expertise, you will perform software development tasks, including creation of configuration controls, to satisfy the design and functional specifications for new systems applications, as well as supporting and maintaining existing systems.
• Executing your proficiency in code deployment processes, you will assist with code deployments in all environments: Dev, QA, and Production.
• Applying your operational insight, you will develop processes and procedures to help optimize IT operations.
• Leveraging your analytical skills, you will monitor metrics and recommend process and system improvements. You will prepare technical reports, system documentation, and user guides.

Demonstrated education and skills

• Post-secondary level education in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution, preferably software programming, computer science or computer software engineering. 
• Minimum one year of experience as a full-stack software developer or equivalent
• Experience with modern front-end framework/library (Angular, React, Vue, etc.). Experience with backend language (Java/Spring, C#, Python, etc.).
• Experience with Azure, OpenShift/Kubernetes, and/or other cloud technologies .
• Awareness of object-oriented Design and design patterns.
• Understanding of UI/UX design and agile methodologies.
• Experience with git and continuous integration.
• Experience with the following systems is an asset: infrastructure and application monitoring, databases and SQL (Oracle, MSSQL primarily), containerization/docker and unit testing.

What you can expect  

• This role will work in a hybrid environment with requirements to be onsite at a Canadian Blood Services location 40% of the time/2 days of the week.
• You will work Monday to Friday, 37.5 hours per week, 7.5 hours per day. 
• If you are located outside of Ottawa, you may be expected to travel to our office location in Ottawa – 2540 Lancaster Rd, quarterly for in-person team meetings when required.
