Please read the Application Instructions before applying The Laboratory Services Division (LSD), an autonomous entity within the University of Guelph, is dedicated to providing diagnostic and testing services to a diverse clientele, including private industry, government agencies, and academic institutions. LSD comprises two distinct operational units, the Animal Health Laboratory (AHL) and the Agriculture and Food Laboratory (AFL), spanning three geographical locations.

As the Senior Technician, you will collaborate closely with the Technical Supervisor, Information Technology, and a team of Information Technology specialists. Your primary role is to support and maintain business application systems used by both internal and external stakeholders in Guelph and Kemptville. This critical role serves to deliver ongoing, detailed, and complex hardware and software support (2nd level) to over 300 users within the Laboratory Services Division.

Key Responsibilities: Continuous upkeep of the Division's local area network and telephony infrastructure. Installation, maintenance, and monitoring of server hardware and software, encompassing VMWare, Windows Server, Netware/OES, RHEL, SuSe Linux, Oracle, SQL, Sage 300, and Labvantage. Providing hardware and software support, including user training, for the Division's desktop computers and applications.

In addition to your technical responsibilities, you will act as a lead for 1st level support technicians and co-op students in your work area. This role involves coordinating daily workflow, assisting in onboarding and training new team members, being available for on-call activities, and stepping in as a backup to the Technical Supervisor during their absence. Qualifications: To be considered for this role, candidates must have the following qualifications: A three-year community college diploma in computer systems technology or a computer technologist program, coupled with at least 2 (two) years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and professional background.

Core Technical Competencies: Proficiency in managing RHEL, SuSe Linux, and Windows Server OS. Expertise in VMWare and VSphere. A strong understanding of server backup and restore procedures.

Demonstrated knowledge of best practices for securing LINUX and Windows OS. Comprehensive knowledge of network architecture, including LAN, WAN, VPN, and Private Networking. Familiarity with the latest versions of Windows desktop and server operating systems, as well as the Microsoft Office suite of applications.

Desirable Skills and Experience: Proven success in a team-oriented, fast-paced, and service-focused environment. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen eye for detail and sound judgment. Familiarity with quality management system requirements.

Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a history of effectively training end-users in software applications. Possession of Network+ and A+ certifications would be advantageous. Experience in system monitoring using Nagios is a plus.

Knowledge of laboratory testing operations and terminology (chemical, microbiological, and veterinary) and a strong understanding of the application and operation of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) in a laboratory testing environment would be considered an asset.
