Job Summary Dalhousie Security Services is a diverse and inclusive team of public safety professionals that collaborates with students, staff, and faculty to build a safer and more connected campus experience. Security Services believes that students are the most important part of our campus, promoting an inclusive, holistic, and client-centric approach to personal safety and security while being a resource in the delivery of reassurance, education, and support of referral initiatives. Reporting to the Director of Security, through the Assistant Director, Operations Manager and Security Patrol Managers, the Security Officer acts as a patrol level security officer, whose primary goal is to offer assistance, document the interaction, and exercise discretion in relation to University and Security Services matters
Key Responsibilities - Conducts foot patrol functions to reassure the community through high-engagement interactions.
- Provides initial response to fire alarms, intrusion alarms, well-being checks, mental health emergencies, disturbances, and/or suspicious/criminal activities.
- Delivers first aid and/or emergency assistance in cases of accident or injury involving any student, employee, or visitor(s) to the University.
- Answers incoming emergency calls promptly and calmly, extracting critical details regarding the nature and location of emergencies while evaluating the severity of situations and prioritizing responses accordingly; additionally, coordinates security officers and/or other emergency responders to arrive on-scene.
- Maintains an operational knowledge of a sophisticated electronic access control and CCTV system.
- Documents in patrol notebook and completes detailed incident reports as required.
Note Due to operational requirements, the successful applicant is required to work in-person on campus
Officers work a block of rotating 12-hour shifts: two dayshifts followed by two nightshifts and four days off. Successful applicants will be required to complete a criminal record check and provide a drivers abstract
Required Qualifications - Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent with relevant or related experience.
- Good oral and written communication skills essential with English competency.
- A valid Class 5 Nova Scotia driver’s license with no restrictions is required to operate security vehicles.
- Demonstrated competency working with diverse populations and an ongoing commitment to building more inclusive communities.
- Must demonstrate a proven attention to detail with the ability to operate with competence and professionalism.
- Must be curious, with a commitment to ongoing learning and understanding context of the bigger picture; additionally, is willing to take initiative, constantly finding ways to do better while encouraging positive outcomes.

Assets - Advanced Medical First Responder training.
- Previous security training and experience particularly working in a post-secondary or health care environment.
- Unique training and/or experience related to security operations.
- Fluency in other languages.
