Job Description

Registered Nurses provide care to individuals who need assistance as they deal with the effects of aging, injury, surgery, or illness.

Registered Nurses in this position may care for clients with mental health problems, including patient treatment and rehabilitation. This role requires clinical expertise, specialized skills, and personal qualities to provide effective care for patients.

 Please note that this role could be for RT Medical staff, agency staffing support, recruitment for other agencies.

As a Registered Nurse you will:  

• In collaboration with the patient/family/caregiver and other health care professionals, help formulate a plan of care based on patient assessment and provide patient care consistent with standards of practice
• Evaluate effectiveness of treatment plan(s) and adjust accordingly in consultation with the patient/family/caregiver and other health care professionals 
• Possible travel within your region between patients' homes
• Providing services in a variety of settings which may include in-home, clinic, retirement home or school 
• Performing other clinical duties as required 
• Experience in wound care, IV medications and re-sites, catheter care, compression/VAC and ostomy care considered an asset
• Act as a patient advocate by protecting and promoting patient rights
• Provide a safe, therapeutic environment including acute nursing care, crisis management and stabilization
• Maintain accurate and detailed patient records according to regulatory and facility standards
• Lead and guide other nursing staff in daily work assignments, ensuring work is completed to standards
• Demonstrate commitment to working in an anti-oppression/racism, harassment and discrimination free workplace
• Ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards, as well as facility policies and procedures related to patient care and safety

Skills and Experience Required   

• Ability to conduct comprehensive mental health assessments, including evaluating mental status, risk factors, and developing care plans based on individual needs are an asset
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively interact with clients, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals
• Manage and de-escalate crisis situations, employing strategies to ensure the safety of patients and others in high-stress situations
• Proficiency in administering psychiatric medications, understanding their effects, side effects, and ensuring patient compliance and safety
• Ability to analyze complex situations, think critically, and make sound decisions in rapidly changing or challenging environments
• Sensitivity to diverse cultural backgrounds and an understanding of how cultural factors influence mental health perceptions and treatment preferences
• Physical ability to stand, bend, walk, crouch, kneel and reach, ability to lift 50lbs (23 kg)

Education and Certifications Required

• Have one of the following qualifications:
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree BScN (preferred)
  • Bachelor of Nursing degree (BN)
• Certification in psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing is considered an asset. 
• Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse in good standing with College of Nurses of Ontario
• Clear understanding of the MHA and relevant legislation
• Knowledge and skill in psychiatric nursing practice as articulated in the Canadian Standards of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Practice
• CPI and ASSIST training is considered an asset
• CPR, WHIMIS, Fire Safety and Evacuation Training
• Valid Standard First Aid and Level C CPR
• Updated immunization records (including completion of a two-step tuberculosis test within the last 6 months)
• Clear criminal background check, and Vulnerable sector check are required upon hire 
• Valid G2/G driver's license and access to a reliable car is considered an asset
