Job description

The Earth and Environmental Sciences Instructor is responsible for organizing and instructing laboratories, lectures, tutorials and/or field components of courses with the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, developing and writing laboratory exercises and manuals, designing assessments and keeping the content and resources current and relevant to the learning outcomes.
Administration of assigned lab, tutorial and field course instruction, including but not limited to:
- Independently develops the content, organizes and runs laboratory-only courses;
- Organizes and creates assignments, laboratory manuals, midterms and final exams for assigned laboratory courses including updates to materials as necessary;
- Marks assignments, midterms and exams; calculates and submits final grades to the Registrar’s Office;
- Ensures that laboratory activities and assessments reflect the contents of a course and align with the learning outcomes;
- Organizes and leads assigned multi-day, off-campus field courses
- Actively present during all laboratory periods to assist students and is responsible for the safety of the students and Teaching Assistants (TAs)
- Orders supplies and equipment as required for laboratories;
- Purchases and maintains laboratory or field equipment, including fixing minor equipment problems;
- Interacts with and attends workshops organized by Counselling Services to obtain appropriate training in dealing with students in distress;
- Participates in committee work as assigned
Teaches specific lecture-only courses as assigned by the Department Chair:
- Develops and teaches specific courses assigned by the Department Chair;
- Develops assignments, quizzes, midterms and final exams including make-up exams for the lecture courses assigned;
- Marks assignments, midterms and exams; calculates and submits final grades to the Registrar’s Office
Manages laboratory Teaching Assistants and Other Teaching Supports each term, including but not limited to:
- Active role in the recruitment and selection of TAs for courses for which the instructor is responsible;
- Trains, Coaches and provides direction to TAs and other teaching supports to provide them with instruction and support regarding laboratory equipment, concepts/, procedures, outcomes and marking;
- Develops the marking rubrics for the TAs;
- Evaluates Teaching Assistants’ performance at the end of each term
Safety Administration
- Establishes, administers, and enforces safety standards and regulations including WHMIS requirements and UW Safety policies and procedures to ensure a safe laboratory setting for students and TAs;
- Updates posted safety procedures including WHMIS, hazardous waste disposal etc. in the laboratories;
- Ensures that the laboratory is kept clean and maintains a safe laboratory environment;
- Maintains personal certifications as required by the Safety Office
Outreach and Special Projects, including but not limited to:
- Participates in Science Outreach events
- MSc in Earth and Environmental Sciences or a closely related discipline is required, PhD would be an asset
- Three years’ teaching experience required in a laboratory and/or classroom setting. Requires broad knowledge of Mineralogy, Petrology, Geology and Sedimentology, Introductory Earth Sciences.
- Experience planning and executing field courses and outreach programs would be an asset
- Knowledge of chemical handling, safety and emergency procedures is required;
- Experience solving problems and working with scientific equipment is an asset;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills required;
- Knowledge of modern tools for online pedagogy is required
