Job description
GENERAL
The Groundskeeper III is responsible for the daily operations of all grounds services and associated grounds equipment on all college campuses. This position is also responsible for the day-to-day supervision of all grounds staff for the safe, continuous, and efficient maintenance of Campus grounds. This position reports to and operates under the direction of the Supervisor of Building Services. This position requires working at both campuses.
TYPICAL DUTIES
- Schedules and supervises Groundskeepers I and II in the performance of grounds-keeping duties including work priorities and daily assignments; as well as assigns work orders;
- Trains and orients new grounds employees in their duties and in use of equipment; sets up training for new systems and equipment; and assists in the recruitment and selection process for new employees;
- Liaises with contractors to schedule work and ensure standards are met in relation to College grounds, inspects and reports on work as required
- Decides in consultation with and under the direction of the Supervisor, the appropriate procedures and methods for grounds maintenance and the design and development of the grounds of all College campuses;
- Ensures pest identification and control, including the application of pesticides if necessary;
- Ensures regular grounds inspections of both campuses: including parking lots; building exteriors and gutters; fountains and water features; outdoor seating; outdoor track and field surfaces; and drains and landscape irrigation systems
- Ensures Campus outdoor areas are clean and free from hazards, including refuse removal and potential hazardous material cleanup;
- Orders supplies and materials required for grounds projects acquires quotes as required and assists with purchase of new equipment and capital planning;
- Uses departmental budget in a responsible manner, reconciles company credit card;
- Maintains operation of greenhouses;
- Ensures that quality and safety standards are maintained;
- Assists with the preparation and implementation of preventative maintenance procedures;
- Arranges for the regular mechanical maintenance of all grounds equipment, including vehicles; liaises with repair companies for emergency repairs
- Plans and directs snow/ice mitigation and removal, including coordinating grounds staff as well as maintenance and custodial staff (when required).
- Ensures appropriate documentation is completed;
- In addition, performs the duties of a groundskeeper I and groundskeeper II, including but not limited to:
- maintenance of grounds, lawns, shrubs, flower beds and trees by digging, hoeing, weeding, planting, watering, fertilizing, pruning, mowing and edging; maintenance of sidewalks, roadways and parking areas by sweeping, power spraying and clearing of debris; operating power equipment associated with grounds maintenance including mowers, edgers, weeders, rototillers and tractors; driving the college truck for picking up supplies, trailering equipment to work site, dumping of waste materials, etc; operating and maintains grounds irrigation systems including changing heads, repairing lines, cleaning, winterizing and charging systems; and routine mechanical maintenance such as greasing, oiling, plugs and filters.
- Performs other related duties similar in scope and complexity.
QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of Grade 12 and completion of Certificate in Horticulture Technician or equivalent certification, and five years of related work experience including experience in work scheduling and instruction of task performance and of which includes two years relevant supervisory experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Thorough knowledge of WHMIS legislation, and WSBC regulations.
- Sound knowledge of irrigation systems, operations and maintenance procedures.
- Thorough knowledge of Grounds operations, maintenance and safety procedures.
- Demonstrated supervisory skills
- Working knowledge of computer software including MS Office Suite.
- Class 5 B.C. Driver’s license.
- Valid pesticide license or ability to obtain one.
- Must be in good physical health and have ability to operate all equipment pertaining to grounds maintenance.

Salary: $32.39-$34.54 per hour
