Wildfire Data Scientist

Job description

Key Responsibilities Include:

The successful candidate will be responsible for incorporating their knowledge of data science and their skill set into the Predictive Services Unit, helping to create new tools, enhance processes, identify trends and insights in complex data sets. You will work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to design and implement innovative and different business and wildfire operational tools to enhance information sharing.

Working closely with the entire Predictive Services Team (Weather Unit, Fire Behaviour Analyst, Wildfire Intelligence and Geospatial Services Program Lead), mentorship and a learning opportunity into wildfire operations will hopefully provide you will the necessary information needed to build and create detailed tools and processes that meets the needs of the business. You will work closely with Government of Alberta partners to understand their projects and contribute, as well as design and develop data visualizations, dashboards, and tools that communicate insights in a clear and actionable way.

Requirements:

Minimum Requirements:

Bachelor’s Degree in a field related to computer science, software engineering, forestry, resource management, biology or equivalent with 2 years of related experience.

Or Technical diploma in a field related to computer science, software engineering, forestry, resource management, biology or equivalent plus 4 years of related experience.

Experience may include data analysis, programming languages, computer science, software engineering, database design and development. Strong computer skills and knowledge in database creation and management and software applications.

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
