About the Job
This is a very exciting time to join the team as we build on our success from launching the OTTO Lifter and embark on designing more autonomous mobile robot (AMR) forklifts. As a highly-experienced, well-rounded, and resourceful staff-level Mechanical Designer, you will be on the Forklift Development team within OTTO’s Hardware Engineering department. You will be a key player in designing new and supporting existing AMR forklifts as you work most closely with other mechanical designers, systems designers, electrical designers and program/project managers. Extensive collaboration with software, manufacturing engineering, production, and field service will also be important at various stages of a project.
About You
You are a professional with an advanced background in mechanical design for new product development. You are considered more experienced than Intermediate- and Senior-level designers, hence this Staff-level designation.
Your primary responsibilities will be:
Product Development:
New product development and enhancement of existing products through application of engineering fundamentals, applicable regulations/standards and internal policies
Generate & document design requirements
Create 3D models and technical drawings using SolidWorks
Design, build and test prototype
Plan and/or lead test programs (or support the HW/SW Test team)
Collaborate on DFMEAs and risk assessments
Create internal and external documents such as service procedures, bulletins, manuals, spare parts lists, etc.
Work with suppliers to understand their capabilities and support the procurement process
Production/Operations Support:
Define requirements for incoming, intermediate and final quality inspection/testing when additional guidance is required by the Quality team
Review FAIs
Participate in pilot builds and work instruction reviews
Help remedy and/or investigate production issues
Field Support:
Support the Services team on customer deployments, including diagnosing issues escalated to you
Support the Application Engineering team by collaborating on qualification tools/procedures
General Collaboration & Leadership:
Review the work of other engineering staff, including design and production-readiness reviews
Collaboration with other functional groups such as SW, Test, Production/Operations, Services, Marketing etc.
Document the progress of assignment in Jira and other internal tools
Develop/update internal processes
Skills and experience:
15+ years of relevant experience designing electro-mechanical machines.
Ability to provide technical leadership on complex projects, including coordinating the efforts of other engineers, generating project plans, leading meetings, identifying project risks, estimating timelines, calculating BOM costs, etc.
3D CAD software experience (preferably SolidWorks).
Strong mechanical design and analysis skills in the areas of kinematics (including springs), stress analysis, tolerance stack-ups.
Strong GD&T skills; able to review other’s drawings and coach others on best practices.
Experience with various manufacturing processes such as machining, sheet metal fabrication, powder coating, and welding.
Ability to collaborate with external parties (suppliers, salespeople, consultants, contractors. etc.).
Ability to provide mentorship to intermediate or senior level employees.
Strong written and verbal communications skills; the ability to document assignment progress periodically.
Ability to work under pressure on time-sensitive assignments when they arise.
Exemplary resourcefulness, initiative, organizational skills, perseverance, and the ability to apply these skills to highly complex projects.
When working from home, you have the ability to commute to various facilities within the Kitchener-Waterloo area on short notice (e.g. to oversee a last-minute test, unblock production, etc.).
Ability to occasionally travel outside of Ontario to visit suppliers, trade shows, customers, partners, etc..

AMR or automation technology, including sensors (optical, ultrasonic, magnetic and mechanical)
Machine safety standards
Finite element analysis software
FEA, thermal, and/or vibration analysis
Drivetrain (including electric motor) specification/design/testing
Material finishing & coating processes
Use of industrial adhesives
Reading electrical schematics
