Junior Planner

The Junior Planner will be responsible to assist the Planning, Development and Urban Design Division with the processing of land use planning applications and completion of policy planning initiatives including, but not limited to, processing of applications to the Committee of Adjustment and undertaking independent research, providing options and recommendations for land use planning policies and special studies, and supporting public consultations on policy initiatives such as Official Plan Reviews, Provincial legislation and policy conformity exercises and City land use planning policy initiatives.  Undertake detailed statistical research and use GIS applications to monitor the City’s achievement of City and provincial planning requirements and objectives.

Qualifications

Knowledge and experience normally associated with a University Degree in urban planning, geography or related discipline with 1-2 years’ previous and on-the job experience in a planning environment. Membership in Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) and/or Ontario Provincial Planners Institute (OPPI) would be considered an asset.  Advanced knowledge of G.I.S. applications to land use planning and presentation software.  Sound knowledge and understanding of municipal planning, residential development, provincial planning policies and governing legislation and detailed Statistics Canada census data. Must have the ability to read and understand municipal Official Plans, Zoning By-laws, maps and conceptual drawings.

Must possess problem solving and team skills; oral and written communication skills; the ability to work within deadlines; the ability to effectively coordinate the work of others; the ability to function in a computerized environment including an advanced knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, project management presentation, G.I.S. (e.g. ArcMap) and database software; the ability to work in a unionized environment; ability to establish effective working relationships with all internal and external stakeholders including planners, staff from other municipalities, members of the public.  The incumbent must have a creative/innovative focus on service delivery; a commitment to continuous improvement; a respect for the diversity of opinions, perspectives and ideas; and be comfortable with changing priorities and demands.  Must be able to work independently under minimal supervision.

$61,016.85
