Penelakut Island Learning Centre, located on Penelakut Island off the shore of Chemainus B.C provides the community with an opportunity to receive a high school diploma, adult dogwood or an evergreen certificate. We offer a 4-day work week, with operation Monday to Thursday. Penelakut Island Learning Centre is an Independent First Nations School and strives to educate our students to be independent, life-long learners.
Position Summary:
The teacher will provide instruction, supervision, and education services to our students, supporting extracurricular activities as required. The teacher will provide instruction in Math and Science courses that are required to reach an evergreen, dogwood/adult dogwood diploma. The Penelakut Island Learner Centre offers small class sizes and integrates First Nations language and culture into the programming. The successful candidate will be a creative self-starter who thrives in having substantial amount of professional autonomy, as they will be required to have a considerable amount of flexibility around course preparations. The teacher will be expected to meet timetable demands for course and electives required for grades 8-12.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
-Follow the B.C. curriculum to teach a variety of courses and electives to support the grade 8-12 timetable;
-Following council approved curriculum to support Penelakut culture within lessons;
-Developing lesson plans and providing individualized/small group instruction to a diverse range of students;
-Using a variety of instructional strategies, such as inquiry, group discussion, lecture, and discovery;
-Establishing and maintaining standards of student behaviour needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom;
-Evaluating students’ academic and social growth, keeping appropriate records, and preparing progress reports;
-Preparing student report cards;
-Communicating with parents/students through conferences and other means to discuss students’ progress and to interpret the school program;
-Identifying student needs and cooperating with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude, and learning problems;
-Demonstrated ability to use and integrate technology meaningfully into teaching and learning;
-Maintaining professional competence through in-service education activities provided by professional growth activities;
-In consultation with other professional staff members selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintain an inventory of these items;
-Assisting in the general supervision of the school;
-Attending regular and special staff meetings as called by the Principal or Education Director;
-Submitting a Ministry of Education approved course outline to the Principal by the specified date;
-Maintaining membership in the BC College of Teachers and submitting annual proof of this membership by September 1 each year;
-Planning and coordinating various school-related events (graduation);
-Monitoring student use of technology;
-Maintaining confidentiality of students and students’ records;
-Promoting and encouraging community involvement in the school;
-Purchasing student supplies as required;
-Providing guidance, support and delegation to the Teacher Aide, Education Assistant, Cook, Administrative Secretary and Janitor;
-Planning and supporting students on school field trips.
Education/Knowledge/Skills
-Bachelor of Education and a member of the BC Teacher Regulation Branch;
-Experience working in First Nations Schools would be an asset;
-Ability to work with students with diverse needs;
-Clear criminal record check;
-Strong leadership skills with the ability to delegate tasks;
-Valid BC Driver’s License.
