General Information

Reporting to the Senior Executive Director, Medical Affairs, BC Cancer, the Medical Director, Staff Wellness and Engagement will be primarily responsible for actively engaging BC Cancer’s diverse staff with an inclusive lens to understand staff challenges and opportunities, and respond by removing obstacles and co-creating solutions. The director will work in collaboration with BC Cancer senior leaders and operational partnersto set direction and vision in the development and implementation of the BC Cancer Staff Wellness and Engagement program. The director will work in collaboration with the PHSA Medical Directors for Medical Staff Workplace Health and Safety, and Medical Staff Development and Engagement to ensure alignment and synergism with the work of those teams.

The Medical Director, Staff Wellness and Engagement provides leadership and oversight of initiatives that encourage engagement between staff and BC Cancer leadership. The Medial Director, Wellness and Engagement is a conduit of information between BC Cancer and partner organizations such as Doctors of BC as it relates to physician wellness and engagement.

The Services to be provided by the Medical Director will include those administrative services reasonably required to fulfill the duties of Medical Director, Medical Staff Wellness and Engagement and will include the following:

Specific Accountabilities

Working in collaboration with operational and medical leaders across BC Cancer and PHSA, the Medical Director leads the design, implementation and evaluation of initiatives and strategies that optimise staff wellness and/or engagement at BC Cancer

Builds a community of staff who are partners in continuously improving care and creating and sustaining change in health care.

Fosters growth, trust and healthy relationships with medical staff.

The Medical Director will work with partners to inform and develop initiatives and strategies focused on improving Medical Staff Wellness and engagement

Develops strategic partnerships with provincial, national and international clinical and operational leaders to support the strategic direction of BC Cancer Medical Staff Wellness & Engagement.

Facilitates an environment of engagement, collaboration and cooperation across BC Cancer programs to achieve results, e.g. through regular meetings, open communication, and providing opportunities to contribute.

Fosters an environment of respect, diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Provide guidance for communications to all Staff at BC Cancer related to workplace health, as required

Consult with partners and health care professionals on workplace health management issues related to staff arising anywhere in British Columbia, as required.

Develops and leverages a keen understanding of physician and non-physician groups including people, culture, systems, capabilities, performance, data analytics, challenges, and barriers to success. Utilizes this understanding to facilitate development of strategies, in conjunction with internal and external partners, to positively influence medical staff engagement in decision-making.

Strengthens relationships with staff and supports governance and organizational capacity to effectively engage staff with a common goal to support improved patient outcomes and increased professional satisfaction.

Provides leadership and support for department heads and medical directors within BC Cancer who are driving engagement or change initiatives.

Participates in the Medical and Staff Wellness and Engagement Working Group

Additional specific deliverables as mutually agreed upon from time to time.

Qualifications & Key Competencies

The successful candidate must have a Medical Doctor degree with current licensure or eligibility for licensure with the College of Physicians & Surgeons of British Columbia. Experience in a leadership role, and demonstrated interest/experience in staff wellness or engagement are assets.

As per the current Public Health Order, full vaccination against COVID-19 is a condition of employment with PHSA as of October 26, 2021.
