We have an exciting opportunity for a full-time
Biologist / Ecologist based in Vancouver, BC, to join our dynamic team. Our ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in marine biology, ecology, fisheries and/or aquatics and be experienced in marine or aquatic field survey and sampling, assessments, and technical reporting. This position is based in Vancouver to serve our local field programs with the flexibility to work from both the Vancouver office and a home office
Overall responsibilities and key accountabilities:
- Conduct and lead marine fish and fish habitat assessments including collection and analysis of marine biological, chemical, and physical data
- Support oceanographic, wildlife, vegetation, clean soils, fisheries, aquatic and reclamation field programs
- Collaborate across regions and disciplines to meet project goals
- Develop environmental scopes and cost estimates with direction from the technical lead
- Prepare permit and approval applications, including supporting documentation
- Provide compliance support including environmental and/ or acoustic monitoring
- Prepare baseline reports and effects assessments, including data entry and analysis
- Provide client and task management and project coordination, including communications through verbal and written correspondence
- Implement safe working practices and policies, and contribute to health and safety discussions and follow occupational health and safety procedures
- Conduct local field work and travel for various field programs, as required
The successful candidate will have the following qualifications and capabilities:
- Bachelors or master’s degree in marine biology or related field
- Minimum 2 years applied work experience related to either environment science, ecology, or aquatic sciences.
- Interest to work towards obtaining a Registered Professional Biologist (R.P. Bio) designation or current R.P. Bio in good standing
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of various aquatic life forms, coastal ecology, and marine or aquatic habitat
- Understanding of applicable legislation pertaining to Canadian coastal and estuarine environments, including, but not limited to Species at Risk Act , Fisheries Act , Navigable Waters Protection Act , Canadian Environmental Protection Act , BC Water Sustainability Act , and Environmental Management Act
- Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills
- Strong interpersonal, management and leadership skills
- Strong technical writing skills
- Self-starter and flexible team player
- Ability to work within a team environment
- Excellent computer skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in the field and carry out challenging programs in all weather conditions
For applicants based in the province of British Columbia, the salary range is $64,277 to $94,525.
Application of the pay band: Variation in salary is determined by factors such as the candidate’s qualifications, relevant years of experience, geographic location, internal pay equity, and prevailing market conditions for the specific role.
