Our division is currently seeking a Director of Health and Safety located in our Saint John, N.B head office
The Director is responsible for working closely with the Group Vice President and overseeing the execution of HSE strategy, working across businesses to generate leverage with emphasis on achieving safety goals
The successful candidate will have a track record of safety leadership, operational experience, strategic thinking, and improvement with complex businesses. They will foster a spirit of enthusiasm, confidence, and teamwork
Qualifications & Skills
- Post-secondary education and 10+ years of leadership experience in a Safety role is preferred with exposure to provincially regulated and federally regulated businesses.
- Experience in the Transportation/Logistics industry or Oil and Gas industry preferred.
- A strong business presence complemented by change management skills, resourcefulness, sound business judgement and a customer focus.
- A well-rounded industrial sector individual with a proven track record of successfully leading an organization’s safety function.
- Superior interpersonal skills: someone who listens well, respects a diversity of opinions, maximizes the experience and knowledge of the team, and employs an open, clear, and succinct communication style with the ability to quickly gain trust and respect.
- Results driven with an understanding of the sense of urgency in achieving targets.
- In depth knowledge of Safety Management Systems and methods for evaluating their effectiveness
Key Responsibilities
- Work closely with Group Vice President on divisional strategy and identification of key areas of focus and improvement.
- Lead major safety initiatives in businesses or across the division as outlined by the Group Vice President.
- Provide timely reporting of results to senior management and collaborate with colleagues, customers and other stakeholders on the development and implementation of plans and strategies.
- Lead the implementation of new systems and processes to improve results, leveraging existing safety tools, programs, and standards from across the J.D. Irving, Limited family of companies.
- Ensure appropriate reporting tools are in place to monitor regulatory compliance and results with the view of continually improving safety.
- Work with individual business to ensure effective training programs for safety and operational training are in place with consistent usage of learning management systems.
- Identify and act to correct unsatisfactory conditions where appropriate.
- Ability to partner with the safety leads in the businesses to influence change.
