The salary range for this position is:

Recruitment range: $120,186 - $150,232 maximum starting salary is determined through knowledge, experience and internal equity.

Performance range: starting salary to max of $172,768 is available through annual performance increases.

Job Summary

The Office of the Vice President Research and Innovation (OVPRI) provides guidance for UVic’s research enterprise at the institutional level, including setting strategic research priorities, building partnerships, developing initiatives, and providing services to support research to ensure that UVic research continues to grow and prosper.

The Office of Research Services (ORS) supports Aspiration 2030 and the research mission of UVic, to benefit society through the advancement and application of knowledge, creative and artistic expression, and the creation of a research inspired learning environment. The ORS provides top-quality administrative support and services to researchers to attract and manage their funding, including:

• identifying research funding opportunities, deadlines, information and requirements
• strengthening research proposal development and providing submission support,
• facilitating post-award processes and managing externally sponsored research funds, and
• overseeing research policies and procedures that meet regulatory standards.

Mandate/core purpose of role:

The Director Research Services (DRS) provides management and administrative leadership to the University and to researchers by ensuring the overall effectiveness of the research administration programs and services within the Office of Research Services, including research finances, pre-award support, post-award approval and human research ethics. The DRS coordinates with both Associate Vice-Presidents Research to ensure research development services are aligned and compliant with human research ethics and animal care services.

The DRS leads grant implementation and planning for ORS, has financial and reporting accountability, ensures compliance with regulatory processes, supports research policy development and implementation, liaises with external funders, partners and associations, and participates in OVPRI operational planning as required.

Job Requirements

Education : Doctoral degree, minimum 7 years’ senior level experience in administration, leadership and management of research programs or initiatives in an academic environment or an equivalent combination of formal qualifications and experience.

• Commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive and respectful working and learning environment.
• Highly motivated and self-directed with demonstrated strong leadership, organizational and management skills.
• Significant experience in management and administration of a team, providing guidance, supervision, mentorship and motivating a team to achieve goals.
• Management of complex research projects
• Knowledge of granting agency policies and requirements, and procedures of funding agencies (i.e., Tri-council agency, MITACS, CFI, MSHRBC)
• Experience with financial management, in particular administering of external research funds
• Ability to simultaneously manage a diverse range of complex projects and activities.
• Competency in determining information needs, identifying sources of information, analyzing data, extracting key data, and communicating findings to audiences of all levels and degrees of interest.
• Strong critical and analytical abilities, excellent problem analysis and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication skills required for presentations, reports, and proposal writing.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills, judgement and tact required to build and maintain positive relationships with multiple constituencies within a university or research institution and with external stakeholders.
• Ability to facilitate dialogue, collaborate, build consensus, and develop synergies with a broad range of constituencies in order to achieve common goals.

The following would be considered an asset:

• Familiarity with policy and program development, implementation, and evaluation in a university environment.
• Understanding and knowledge of strategic planning, budget management, issues management and decision-making processes in a university environment.
