Cenovus is looking for a Senior Turnaround Engineer to join our team!
Reporting to the Manager, Turnarounds Oil Sands this position plays a crucial role in ensuring the successful planning and execution of turnarounds. This position requires a strong background in facility engineering, maintenance management, project management, cost control, scheduling, and risk management within the industrial sector.
The Senior Turnaround Engineer is accountable to support the turnaround process for Planning, Preparation, Execution, and Post-turnaround phases of the process that are defined in the Turnaround “Plan-to-Plan”.
What you’ll do:
Deliver on the business plan for safe, cost effective and on-schedule facility turnarounds.
Consider personal and process safety in all aspects of turnaround planning and execution.
Support the iSTO team to identify TA drivers, up to 2 years prior to execution (timing based on TA complexity), feeding into the budget cycle. Work with TA planning team to initiate planning for drivers and long leads prior to scope close.
Accountable to lead the scope challenge process, based on the TA asset driver lists, after scope close.
Liaison with Long Range Outage Planning (iSTO) & Site Process Engineering to understand how each work scope impacts individual phases’ commodity capacity (considering lock-out boundaries).
Coordinate with iSTO, integrity, reliability, engineering teams to review scopes and ensure the business justification (fitness for service/life extension/modifications) is appropriate for the asset life cycle.
Identify beneficial refinements to work scopes (inspection & repair plans), that will give more certainty in TAR outcomes.
Identify risks and address for any abnormal operations planned (e.g.- partial running facilities, cleaning).
Lead “what-if” workshops, on critical scopes of work, to identify risks and develop robust mitigation plans. Work with operations to find work around solutions as required.
Develop and utilize business supported TAR drivers and associated capacity impacts, to aid in late scope management decisions.
Accountable for relevant TA readiness activities supporting the plan-to-plan milestone process.
Active team member to support site execution by managing found work evaluation with site engineering and integrity teams to evaluate options and provide recommendations.
Coordinate with Facility Engineering to identify and support the development of engineering work packages (EWP) for scopes of work that require facility changes through the Management of Change (MOC) process, such as the use of non-spec piping components (spec waivers), production optimization opportunities and enhanced cleaning/ decontamination methods.
Assist TAR Planning with joint design (e.g.- torque specification), closure weld approvals, vendor submitted repair package approvals and prioritization.
Participate in asset risk assessments as required, including those for planned abnormal operations during ramp-down and ramp-up.
Interface with integrity and engineering teams to support reviews of work scopes. This can include identifying any spec waivers, document revision numbers.
Capture lessons learned on assets, from a scope and budget perspective, to feed back to the iSTO team to support the improvement of the life cycle of scope and budgeting for future outages.
Support continuous improvement projects to enhance the turnaround life cycle. Knowledge share and work with internal and external turnaround organizations to identify and adopt Industry Best Practices.
Updating documentation and processes to support continuous improvement in TA process.

Who you are:
Must be legally entitled to work in Canada
A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering
Registered and in good standing with APEGA
A minimum of 8 years’ experience in oil and gas operations, with preference given to SAGD experience in maintenance and management of change.
Relevant certifications (e.g., Project Management Professional - PMP, Maintenance Management Professional - MMP) are a plus.
Able to work independently in a fast-paced, varied, and diverse environment with changing priorities.
Must be initiative-taking, self-disciplined, and able to demonstrate a high level of productivity.
Strong organization skills, with the ability to set priorities, follow-up and meet deadlines.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across all levels of the company and with external contacts.
Regular site travel (25%) will be required.
