Job description
Major Duties
- Performs a wide variety of technological functions in various aspects of mechanical and electrical engineering, primarily in the support of the design and development of factory automation test systems. Includes preparing and writing innovative detailed proposals for potential customers, working from general automation and instrumentation ideas and concepts.
- Works with new and returning customers in the Mobility, Nuclear, Specialty Automation and Life Science segments, in collaboration with the ATS account/sales team, management and subject matter experts to develop custom solutions to meet our customers’ specific demands.
- Typical activities include reviewing customer specifications and drawings, developing machine concept layout drawings including performing cycle time calculations, developing system cost estimates, writing detailed technical proposals and presenting to both internal management and external customers.
Specific Responsibilities
- Performs detailed review of available customer information, which could include specifications, drawings, procedures, sample parts, and similar production equipment to gain a full understanding of the customer’s needs.
- Travels to the customer’s site to enhance understanding during the proposal development and to present the final solution to the customer.
- Develops creative, innovative and detailed automation concepts for test equipment or systems, writes detailed technical proposals and determines the cost of the proposed solution.
- Assesses third party vendors and suppliers in the quoting process, where necessary.
- In complex projects, the applications engineer involves key members of engineering management to determine suitable pricing and conceptual layout.
- Develops and summarizes system labour and material costs by engaging internal management and other stakeholders, external third party vendors and suppliers to support the estimates.
- Summarizes and presents proposal and cost estimates to ATS Management for approval.
- Conducts technical sales presentations, in collaboration with ATS Management and Account Managers via conference calls, online or in person meetings and formal presentations.
- Liaisons with the Project Manager and Project Team in support of project execution when order is received.
- Uses AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Excel, Word and PowerPoint to ensure proposal execution.
- May be assigned special projects in support of engineering, sales & marketing.
- Ensures that all business activities are performed with the highest ethical standards and in compliance with the ATS Code of Business Conduct.
- Adheres to all health and safety rules and procedures.
Qualifications
- A post-secondary diploma or degree in engineering or equivalent.
- Three years’ experience in applications engineering, with a background in mechanical, electrical, manufacturing, mechatronics, electrical engineering or similar support role, preferably in an automation environment.
- Must have a working knowledge of instrumentation, machine controls, automation principles and manufacturing processes and be able to keep abreast of leading-edge technology.
- Must be proficient with Word, Excel, SolidWorks; proficiency with PowerPoint and AutoCAD 2D is an asset.
- Ability to present ideas, concepts and pricing information in a clear and concise manner suitable for technical audiences is essential.
