The Opportunity
The Operational Services Department is responsible for the operation and maintenance of all in-service assets for the City of Courtenay. The Department is comprised of five Divisions that include Civic Properties Services, Parks Services, Public Works Services, Solid Waste Services and Utilities Services. In addition, it is also responsible for the ongoing operation and maintenance of the City’s in-service road & fleet assets.
Two different types of positions are available: General labour-based assistance or education and outreach as Ambassadors. Both types of positions could involve a combination of both working with City crews in the various sections of the department including Public Works, Parks, and Solid Waste in a variety of diverse activities.
Labour Assistance – involved physical effort and agility including picking up garbage and litter in public areas; cutting grass, sweeping, weeding, cleaning and painting; operating light trucks and small equipment, hand and power tools.
Ambassadors – Ambassadors work in a team of two to provide education and outreach activities to residents in the City of Courtenay. Waste collection service changes and water conservation will be the primary focus. The Ambassadors will be conducting curbside audits and door-to-door visits including direct engagement with residents, the program is intended to improve compliance through education.
This position reports directly to the Foreman or Supervisor depending on which Section assigned to and may receive instructions from designate.
Minimum Requirements
Grade 12, or equivalency;
Must be enrolled in a recognized college or university program;
Valid BC Drivers License;
Good interpersonal and communication skills;
Ability to work well as a member of a team and independently;
Ability to understand and carry out job related instructions;
Ability to continuously use hand tools, lift heavy objects, work in awkward positions, stand and walk throughout the day; frequently climb ladders and work in inclement weather.
This is a union position and subject to the terms and conditions outlined in the current collective agreement between the City and CUPE, Local 556. The current hourly wage rate is $19.80 per hour based on a 40-hour work week. An additional 4% of gross wages is paid in lieu of vacation. This position is available for 4 months (May – August 2024).
