Your new role
We are currently seeking a Geological Technician to join our Brownfields Exploration team in Voisey’s Bay, NL. This is a temporary position of 12 months.
This position is based at the Voisey’s Bay mine site in Labrador, a fly-in fly-out operation, on a two week on, two week off rotation, consisting of 12-hour shifts during the two weeks on.
Reporting to the Exploration Manager, Voisey’s Bay, but under the supervision of the onsite Senior Geologist, the Geological Technician will setup and maintain an accurate orientation of a diamond drill as it pertains to mineral exploration. The incumbents will also complete borehole surveying, including but not limited to gyro, televiewer, IPA packer, etc. Other responsibilities include manual handling and processing of drill core, data collection of drill core, including but not limited to geotechnical logging and sample collection, SG measurements and point load data.
• Support exploration drilling programs including, collection and/or processing of Geophysical, Geotechnical and Geological data/samples following established procedures. This may include geotechnical core logging, RMR, Q, Point load, fracture frequency, orientation/reference lines (ie: Ace tool), and core photography.
• Manage day to day operations of the core shed, and complete general core shed labor
• Operate technical borehole equipment and surface instrumentation such as North-Seeking Gyro, (ie: Reflex Sprint IQ Gyro), Magnetic survey tool, GPS, and Differential GPS.
• Assist in the operations of winches, depth counters and down hole probes such as Optical and Acoustic Televiewers, Full Wave Sonic Probe, etc.
• Provide field support by evaluating possible worksites, collecting baseline information, ensuring compliance and conformance of exploration activities through site visits and inspections.
• Participate in all pre-operating inspections, workplace inspections, toolbox meetings and safety meetings.
• Follow safety policies, procedures, protocol, guidelines, best practices and government regulations at all times.
• Respect the safety and state of the natural environment and other personnel and parties.
• Complete a variety of administrative/technical duties as requested by the Supervisor/Manager.
What you'll need to succeed
• High School Diploma mandatory. Geological or Geotechnical Diploma or equivalent related education and experience.
Skills:
• Knowledge and experience specific to mineral exploration and mining would be an asset.
• Experience in geotechnical logging and downhole surveying is an asset.
• Mechanical aptitude in maintaining field equipment is an asset.
• Self-motivated, Safety-conscious, Flexible, Dependable, pays strict attention to detail and has good communication skills (both verbal and written).
• Intermediate computer skills (experience with MS office suite is mandatory, ArcGIS proficiency is preferred).
• Valid Class 5 Driver’s License mandatory.

Working Conditions:
• This position includes regular periods during which there is continuous physical activity (e.g. walking, standing, lifting material (core boxes) or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (50lbs))
• Frequent exposures to factors such as temperature variations, moving machinery, noise, humidity, which may cause discomfort.
• Frequent need to give concentrated attention, with one or two senses at a time.
• Tasks can be very repetitive and work environment unchanging.
• There may be noticeable pressure from deadlines, production requirements, accuracy or similar demands.
Travel & Accommodations:
• All travel to and from the site will be coordinated by the company. The company charter will pick up the employee, at defined locations within the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, at no cost.
• Accommodations and meals will be provided by the company while on the Voisey’s Bay Mine Site.
