Health, Safety & Wellness Department

Position Description

The Health, Safety & Wellness (HSW) Department provides a variety of services that includes New Hire Health Assessments, Tuberculosis and immunization screening, First Aid, and N95 Respirator Fit testing. The department manages WSIB claims, Short-Term and Long-Term disability work place accommodations sick leaves and disability applications. The Health, Safety and Wellness department also assists in conducting Workplace Inspections to investigate safety concerns and make referrals with respect to issues that require expert opinion and/or intervention as well as conduct follow-up investigation of workplace hazards.

Reporting to the Manager Health, Safety & Wellness, the Safety Specialist coordinates a comprehensive health and safety program for the workplace and promotes a safe and healthy environment for staff, physicians, clients, visitors, volunteers, students, contractors and other stakeholders. As the Safety Specialist, you will take the lead in conducting Incident Investigations, including communication with the Ministry of Labor Training and Skills Development (MOLTSD) via Field Visits, Notice of Injury, Notice of Compliance, ensuring all compliances under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and its applicable regulations. You will consult with managers/staff on less complex incidents and/or safety concerns (e.g. near misses) to ensure compliance under the OHSA and its applicable regulations and monitor any safety hazards via risk assessment, incident reporting, and investigations to determine root causes and develop appropriate proactive recommendation, action plans, and strategies. You will provide support to policy development and training and provide advice and guidance to policies, legislation, and procedures related to occupational safety for the organization. You will draft and/or revise policies, standard operation procedures, administrative procedures, tools, and other official materials as necessary, partner with internal stakeholders in the development/revision/annual review related to health and safety policies in alignment with organization and department objectives. You will support the Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSCs) and act as a resource in preparing members to carry out their roles and responsibilities under the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) and OHSA. You will also provide training/guidance to supervisors/managers on the OHSA and its applicable regulation for the organization and report, maintain, and analyze near misses incidence, incidence of workplace violence, time-lost, critical injuries to support recommendations for management and employees. In this role you will partner with the Occupational Health and Safety team to identify workplace incidents, liaise with external contributors such as Workplace Safety Insurance Board (WSIB) claims for the early/safe return to work of employees and identify areas of risk regarding health and safety practices for the organization as well as creating and preparing regular reports to various stakeholders. You are a Subject Matter Expert on current OHSA and related regulations who will participate/lead improvements to current processes as they relate to safety protocols or training. You will also represent the Occupational Health and Safety department on various committees and act as a key liaison and subject matter expert with JHSC, and internal policy review committees. You will represent CAMH on TAHSN Workplace Safety committee in meetings and disseminates knowledge, learning and information to the organization. Qualifications The successful candidate will have an Undergraduate degree in Occupational Health and Safety or related discipline and be credentialed in OHS or a related discipline. Registration as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional is an asset. You will possess three to five years of relevant experience and can demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of legislation, regulations, and accident prevention relating to Health & Safety. Experience developing content for training related to OHSA and related regulations is required. You have the ability to build consensus and influence without direct authority. You will possess excellent communication skills, decision-making, analytical/problem solving and organizational skills and should also possess excellent judgment, tact and diplomacy to work with diverse teams and stakeholders. You will have the ability to work with minimal supervision in a dynamic work environment. Experience working in a hospital or health care setting is an asset. Excellent computer skills is also required, including proficiency with occupational health software. Bilingualism (French/English) or proficiency in a second language would be an asset.
