Chaplaincy is a part of the Thunder Bay Ministry and leadership. The Chaplain gives emotional and spiritual support and guidance either directly or in coordination with other denominations and religions to clients, residents and staff connected with any program or service of Thunder Bay Community and Residential Services.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Spiritual Qualities:
- Is able to give testimony to personal salvation through the atoning sacrifice of Christ and is living as a disciple of Jesus Christ with a vibrant, Christ-centered faith in Him.
- Believes in the inspiration and authority of the holy scriptures.
- Is practicing a disciplined and balanced life, committed to prayer, study and personal development.
- Is committed to living a moral, exemplary lifestyle in keeping with the Christina faith.
- Is very familiar with, and has a love for, God’s word; with a heart to be involved in the mission of God to reach the “lost” and actively mentors people in spiritual life and personal maturity.
Community & Family Services Responsibilities:
- Plans, develops, maintains and monitors all aspects of the programs’ service delivery and administrative systems; develops and implements new programs to meet changing needs for the following:
- Food Bank Services
- School Programming
- Community Dinners
- Christmas Programs
- Other programs as required.
- Prepares qualitative and quantitative reports as requested; develops quality assurance standards and measurements.
- Identifies and pursues opportunities to enhance program delivery by seeking community partnerships and or new funding sources.
- Compiles and submits accurate monthly case management & statistical records using The Salvation Army Client Management System (CMS) & SAMIS
- Communicate regularly with the Executive Director and make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions and procedures.
- May be needed to assist with the implementation of client programming and Life Skills Assist the Program Services Director in developing and coordinating the delivery of designated programs, including but not limited to Life skills, Independent Living Skills, Social and Recreational
- Monitor appropriate behavior; intervene in crisis situations, provide emotional support and advocacy as required.
- Monitor the environment and clients/residents to ensure safety and security.
- Assists clients/residents by providing support, networking and other direct services.
- Establish, compile and maintain proper records and files as required.
- Liaise with community agencies and resources, other Salvation Army locations, families and other staff members as required.
- Engage in the development of inter-personal relationships that promote dignity and respect.
- Conduct tours of building for groups or individuals as requested by the Director or Executive Director.
- Perform other position related duties as required.
Organizational Responsibilities:
- Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Maintain information in confidence as required.
- Participate as an active and responsible team member in all work groups through which position responsibilities are achieved.
- Participate in probationary and annual performance appraisal process.
- Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner and assist personnel whom the position supports in developing those skills as required. Conduct regular supervision with staff, complete regular performance evaluations and appraisals with staff.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training.
Other Duties:
- Responsible to work safely and report all unsafe or unhealthy working conditions to the Health and Safety Committee.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Participate in regular supervision and performance reviews/evaluations as required.
Perform other duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a permanent full time position based on 40 hours per week.
- Weekend and evening work may be required.
- The incumbent’s work environment is typically in an office or work site within residential and community settings.
- The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:
- Exposure to dirt, bodily fluids, bodily waste
- Exposure to drugs and alcohol
- Noise
- Dealing with angry and abusive people
- Verbal abuse
- Odors
- The incumbent may be exposed to the risk of moderate injury or illness due to:
- Physical attacks by others (i.e. being attacked by a client/resident)
- Exposure to infectious diseases
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Sharp Objects (i.e. needle sticks)
- Other dangerous situations
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- A University Degree or College Diploma in Theology is preferred plus at least three (3) to five (5) years of relevant work experience with the urban disadvantaged population, specifically mental health and addictions,
- First Aid/CPR and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training required or willing to obtain.
- Immunization for Hepatitis B and Tuberculosis screening.
- Valid Ontario Driver’s License, personal vehicle required and insurance, current copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Experience/working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

- Ability to maintain confidentiality and willingness to sign confidentiality statement.
- A background in praise and contemporary worship leadership.
- Demonstrated ability to interact with individuals one-on-one, facilitate support groups and conduct chapel services.

- Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry is required.
- Be able to obtain clearance through the Enhanced Reliability Screening through Corrections Canada.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
