Hatfield Consultants is seeking a Water Resources Technician to join our Water Resources Group in Fort McMurray, Alberta. As part of this dynamic Hatfield team, the Water Resources Technician will provide field, technical and project management support for the design and implementation of hydrology, hydrogeology, water quality, water resource and other environmental management components of Hatfield’s projects in northern Alberta.
Responsibilities:
Compliance with Hatfield’s Health and Safety Management Plan, the law, and client health and safety protocols.
Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to collect data to assess potential project-related and/or climate change related impacts with respect to water resources and environmental values. This will include providing support for a variety of water resource (e.g., hydrogeological, water quality, hydrometric and, climate) monitoring programs under the supervision of experienced Hatfield staff.
Compile, manage and assess water quality, water use, hydrometric, hydrogeologic and climatic data.
Ensure equipment is maintained and calibrated to meet operational and field requirements.
Support on-going data management and reporting functions.
Support research and analytical tasks including data collection, compilation, analysis, statistical and deterministic modeling.
Have excellent communication skills (verbal and written – including technical or scientific writing).
Education and Experience:
B.Sc. or technical diploma in engineering or sciences with hydrology or hydrogeology experience and appropriate qualifications for work in Alberta. The ideal candidate will have 2 – 5 years of demonstrated water resource monitoring experience.
Familiar with the Alberta and Federal regulatory environments for environmental monitoring and construction projects would be an asset.
Other experience that would be an asset includes: construction environmental monitoring; soil, sediment, surface and groundwater quality sampling; and, environmental effects monitoring and reporting.
Experience and interest in field work. Field work in remote locations is required.
Experience related to groundwater exploration and testing, groundwater monitoring, hydrometric, climate, and/or surface water sampling is desirable but not required.
Other Assets/Skills:
Comfortable using technology and a desire to learn how to operate a variety of environmental
monitoring systems such as dataloggers and software packages.
Ability to work in teams of technicians with varying levels of experience and maintain a positive attitude.
Ability and interest to undertake extensive fieldwork, in a range of weather conditions, including working in remote locations and on programs that may require camp stays.
Ability to work in a dynamic consulting environment that requires flexibility and the willingness to work overtime in support of field programs.
Good communication skills.
Attention to detail and an understanding of the importance of adherence to field standard operating procedures and good data collection.
A valid Canadian driver’s license, as well as the ability to drive a ½ ton truck and meet the requirements for our third-party automobile insurance coverage.
