LOCATION: BURNABY, BC
ROLE:
Our client is a medium-sized consulting engineering firm with offices in Burnaby, Kelowna, and Canmore. Our team of more than 35 full-time employees consists of professional engineers, designers, drafters, and administrators, and takes great pride in our entrepreneurial culture.
Since 1979 they have provided a comprehensive range of industrial power and control engineering services - including power system studies, design development, feasibility studies, procurement, construction support and commissioning. Our client has designed over 80 high voltage substations, numerous power distribution systems within plant facilities, and several hundred kilometers of transmission and distribution lines. Their market sector includes public and private utilities, heavy industry, educational institutions, the forest sector, mines, oil & gas, ports, city works, airports, bulk material handling, and independent power producers. Their business is growing, and they are looking for an electrical engineer (P.Eng. or ready to register as P.Eng) to support their electrical design group in Burnaby, BC. You will work in a team setting and participate in a wide variety of design for underground and overhead design projects, including transmission, distribution and substation design and power system studies. You may also be asked to work closely with other staff in the preparation of engineering design packages not related directly to power systems. RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Using Microsoft Office, AutoCAD, and other 3D Design and power system modelling software to develop and prepare drawings, plans, diagrams, layouts, simulations, computer models, and capital costs for electrical and power system designs
- Preparing electrical design documents from conception to completion for projects that include transmission, distribution, and substations projects
- Producing, completing and auditing document packages, drawing sets, construction packages and/or as-built drawings
- Assisting engineering teams with drafting and CAD updates to drawings or other computer related tasks as called upon by fellow engineers or project managers;
- Participating in client design/review meeting
- Working within a project team of other engineers and designers from electrical and other disciplines;
- Assisting with substation and overhead lines/underground cable routing layout & configuration design for high, medium, and low voltage projects;
- Visiting construction/green field sites local or remote locations to conduct field site inspections and field reports
- Assembling design and construction packages for internal reviews and as deliverables to clients
- Liaising with clients, developers and internal customers as required
- Assisting with project development, scope, and budget;
- Completing power system studies and analysis using engineering software packages such as PLS-CAD, EasyPower, SKM, ETAP, Win-IGS, CDEGS and PS-CADD;
- Preparing electrical equipment specifications, electrical installation scope of work documents, and performance specifications;
- Reviewing vendor approval drawings and evaluate major equipment bids;
- Perform both peer/independent reviews and support fellow engineers (P.Eng);
- Comply with Quality Management and Health and Safety Programs
EDUCATION, TRAINING & EXPERIENCE
- Degree in electrical engineering or an otherwise related field
- At least five years of electrical and power system design is required
- Registered (or eligible for registration) for P.Eng. and/or PE (or equivalent) designation
- Experience in one or more of following areas will be optional but would be an asset:
- SCADA
- P&C Design with IEC 61850
- Solar power plants, BESS, pump storage
- Power quality measurements and analysis
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Experience with the use of power simulation software and design drafting experience in AutoCAD an asset
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel and Word
- Strong verbal communication abilities, good organization, interpersonal and customer service skills
- Ability to work in a team environment and with minimal supervision
- Ability to work remotely and/or within a full office environment
- Be physically fit as site visits on potentially uneven ground are required
- Class 5 Drivers license required
