Job Summary

The Waste Officer, Canada is responsible for delivering the day-to-day management of CN’s Operational Waste Management Programs. The role provides direction to field level employees and acts as the Subject Matter Expert (SME), providing technical expertise to Operational functions in the management, storage, and disposal of operational
by-products. The role requires collaboration for complete management of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes, environmental industrial maintenance, and the delivery of mixed solid waste and recycling systems. The position plays a significant role in delivering on CN sustainability targets and employee engagement activities, in addition to operational and compliance objectives within the organization’s Safety and Environment, Social and Governance pillars.

Main Responsibilities

· Serve as a technical knowledge and program partner resource for field and corporate based teams as it relates to waste and recycling matters

· Design and planning service as well as escalation in partnership with field operations and approved waste vendors

· Analyze data to assess minimization, landfill, and non-landfill solutions

· Analyze data to ensure contract integrity, cost control and saving alternatives, in addition to compliance, finance, and sustainability reporting activities

· Track, measure and support Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) within vendor relationships

· Support vendor compliance assessments and audits of transfer, storage, and disposal facilities

· Structure document management solutions, including, but not limited to, waste characterization, profiling, and manifesting

· Participate in vendor negotiations and quotation requests for new or project-specific requirements throughout the network

· Provide technical support and expertise on environmental management best practices within CN yards and associated facilities

· Correspond and collaborate effectively with suppliers, program leads and partners, consultants, and other program partners

· Develop strong relationships with Environment department collaborators and cross-functional departments as well as field personnel

· Support with environmental, health and safety auditing activities as required

· Work with internal EcoConnexions team on recycling initiatives

· Provide functional and administrative leadership to managers within the team

· Conduct field training at various yards across the network

Working Conditions

The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. The role requires occasional travel (up to 40%) to perform visits and field activities across all aspects of CN Operations.

Requirements Experience

Environment and Waste Management

· Between 3 to 5 years of experience in a related environmental field, rail operations, or program management

o Experience in project management, data analysis, data and financial management systems, and reporting

Education/Certification/Designation

· Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science, Business Administration, Engineering or equivalent in a related discipline

· Valid Driver’s License

Technical Skills/Knowledge

· Knowledge of environmental regulations across the Network (e.g., waste, wastewater, pollution release)

· Knowledge of waste management regulations (provincial, federal, and local) and expertise in best management practices

· Knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA), Land Disposal Restrictions (LDR), and Transportation of Dangerous Goods (TDG)

· Knowledge of stewardship programs across Canada

· Knowledge of Microsoft Office, SharePoint and Power BI

· Fluently bilingual, written and verbal (English, French)

· Knowledge of railway operations*

· Knowledge of Systems, Applications and Products (SAP), Enablon, ENFOS, and Tableau*

*Any knowledge for any of the above would be considered as an asset
