Your Opportunity
The key objectives of this role are:
- Develop and implement the strategy for the transformational integration of computation into our design process.
- Develop and implement standards for design computing, including design excellence, quality control, design standards, efficient processes, and effective delivery to provide high quality design solutions to our clients.
- Advance design computing capabilities as a core skill and practice through professional development and recruitment.
- Be a change agent for transformational design through digital tools and process at the studio level.
The Discipline Leader will advance these responsibilities through engaging across the practice, its projects and pursuits, and the industry at large as a brand ambassador.
Your Key Responsibilities
Discipline Leadership Responsibilities
- Set the vision and strategy for advancing design computing practices across Buildings including the integration of computational design, parametric design, generative design, and artificial intelligence tools.
- Working on the cutting edge of BIM and computation, advancing our approach to design and process challenges using BIM applications and computational design modeling plug-ins such as Autodesk Revit/Civil3D and Dynamo, Rhino and Grasshopper, Bentley applications and Generative Components, and other associated digital tools and code languages such as Python.
- Stay abreast of and respond to the latest developments and advancements in technologies and applications impacting the design process.
- Lead and champion digital transformation and cultural change throughout the practice using change management best practices.
- Develop and implement training, documentation, standards, best practices, and workflows for computational and generative design processes.
- Delivering innovative solutions for our clients that demonstrate the value of design and support a financially viable business.
- Identify, connect, and support emerging leaders in design computing across the organization for growth and advancement.
- Create a road map for training and professional development to advance our practices capabilities in computational design, parametric design, generative design and artificial intelligence technology.
- Engage in the recruitment of emerging and top talent that has a strong knowledge of innovations and design technology.
- Set the tone for thought leadership, research and development, and design excellence related to computational design across the Buildings practice.
- Collaborate with the Buildings & Stantec Innovation teams to determine technologies that can be applied to enhance project design and documentation.
- Understand the business strategy and work with business leaders to identify and prioritize challenges that design computing approaches are well suited to solve.
Core Buildings Leadership Responsibilities
Project Focus
- Personally pursue, assist, and lead significant projects that positively transform our communities and inspire and challenge us as designers.
- Achieve utilization target of 40%.
- Achieve client- and proposal-specific marketing and business development sales goals, including internal cross-selling initiatives target of 20%.
People Leadership
- Act as a highly regarded leader, thought partner, and a source of counsel and advice for the business.
- Engage in and support resource management, career development, engagement, succession planning, coaching, mentoring, and leadership development across the practice.
- Take a proactive role in furthering our presence and leading staff to participate in Professional Symposiums/ Publications/Webinars as well as partner with marketing and public relations for published articles and white papers to demonstrate excellence and thought leadership in targeted areas.
Financial Management
- Assist with developing the annual design computing budget allocation, manage the allocation, and provide budget review.
- Contribute to the annual business plan and budget, outlining the vision, focus, and priorities for design computing implementation and setting specific goals for business and practice performance in this area.
- Coordinate sponsorships and membership in professional organizations that align with the design computing mandate.
Enhance our Practice
- Partner with Buildings’ DLs, sector leaders (SLs), regional business leaders (RBLs), and regional growth leaders (RGL) to drive internal awareness and market computational design expertise to our internal teams and clients.
- Participate on the Buildings Leadership Team and actively collaborate with the BOUL, BLs, SLs, RBLs, RGLs, DLs in the improvement of design and the computational design strategies and tools that can be employed to help differentiate us in the market on major pursuits.
- Position the Stantec Buildings practice platform as a preferred employer in the markets we work in for the purposes of staff recruitment and retention.
- Build relationships with other Stantec Business Lines and Sectors to foster cross-pollination of work and to capitalize on new business opportunities.
- Advance inclusion and diversity practices to maximize the human potential in our firm.
- Work with the leads of strategic growth opportunities to support their initiatives to win more work to sustain the long-term growth of our business.
- Contribute to Stantec’s Safer Together culture, prioritizing the physical and mental health and safety of our employees.
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Progressive design professional with a strong knowledge of computational design technology and emerging applications including: 3D modeling software such as Revit and Rhino; parametric design methodologies using Dynamo and Grasshopper; data and 3D visualization capabilities utilizing PowerBi and Tableau; and multi-variable optimization through Machine Learning & AI
- Strong communicator able to convey design technology-related concepts to all levels of technical and non-technical people.
- Ability to tell the story of how design computing positively impacts our design solutions.
- Strong experience using computational and generative design software.
- Experience with best practices in change management.
- Ability to work at the organizational scale as a senior leader across the entire BOU.
- Work with multi-disciplinary teams across Buildings’ diverse sectors and offices.
- Strong team player, collaborator, and communicator with excellent people skills.
- Ability to travel to across North America.
- Authentic passion for the value of our integrated design practice and a respect for our ethos as a leading integrated design consultancy committed to sustainable design values.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Design Computing, Architecture, or a related field with a focus on computational design technologies.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in an architecture/engineering practice and experience leading the application of digital technology into the design process.
- Experience leading an enterprise-wide transformation preferred.

Salary Range(s):
- $144,700 - $184,000 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in PEI
- Lower Mainland $160,800/BC Other Areas $170,400 - Lower Mainland $205,000/BC Other Areas $217,300 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in BC (Lower Mainland includes Vancouver & Burnaby)
The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
