Job Summary The Faculty of Management is recognized for its innovative, values-based approach to management education and research. Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Student Success, the Academic Advisor provides developmental academic advising to students assisting them in achieving their academic, career and personal goals. They provide individualized support and services, and act as a referral to different student services across campus
Key Responsibilities - Provide developmental academic advising to students and prospective students for the Bachelor of Commerce Co-op, Bachelor of Management, Bachelor of Science (Recreation)/Bachelor of Management, Minor in Business and Minor in Management programs.
- Provide advice and input regarding advising policy development, assessment, program development and resource needs for academic advising.
- Enhance students’ awareness of available educational resources (such as majors, minors, work terms/internships, study abroad, certificate programs, other experiential learning opportunities including volunteering or part-time employment) and make appropriate referrals by assisting students’ understanding of relevant institutional regulations and degree/program requirements.
- Recognize warning signs that may indicate students are at risk to themselves or to others, or in crisis. Initiate appropriate intervention and/or referral to Health Services, Counselling Services and/or other campus resources. Uphold confidentiality of student’s medical/personal issues.
- Advocate on the student’s behalf with the Assistant Dean, faculty members, senior leaders within the faculty and others as appropriate to help students negotiate and resolve situations regarding degree and program requirements, academic performance problems, or other difficulties in their classes.
Note The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines
Required Qualifications - Undergraduate degree plus approximately three years of related experience in an academic advising environment (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Must possess excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
- Empathy for students and commitment to enhancing their educational and personal development.
- Demonstrate initiative and must be able to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to prioritize work, manage competing deadlines, and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience with computerized student information and degree audit reporting systems, as well as proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, SARS, Banner and social networking sites.
