Job description
ELIGIBILITY FOR THIS COMPETITION IS RESTRICTED TO STEP 1 CANDIDATES INCLUDING OPS ALOC AND OCAA LAWYERS living or working within 125 km of this location. Note: Eligible lawyers from outside the Area of Search may apply but will not be entitled to relocation or travel expenses for the transfer as set out below.
Step 1: All regular/fixed-term OCAA and ALOC lawyers on staff, current Redeployment List Members and current Articling Student Hireback Pool Members. Step 2: In the absence of qualified applicants at Step 1 the competition may be reposted so that external applicants or non-members of the above-mentioned groups would then be eligible to apply
The Ministry of the Attorney General, Victims and Vulnerable Persons Division, Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee (OPGT) seeks 1 counsel to provide legal services in and manage a high-volume and diverse legal practice in the area of property guardianship services at the OPGT's Toronto Office

What can I expect to do in this role?
Duties will include:
- Managing a high-volume legal practice providing legal advice to OPGT internal clients, including daily contact with members of the OPGT's Client Services teams, and contact with the OPGT's incapable clients
- Attending court, drafting pleadings and other documents, providing in-house legal advice on a wide range of areas of law including real estate, trusts, estates, family, landlord – tenant, debtor-creditor, civil litigation and guardianship/mental health matters.
How do I qualify?
Mandatory
- Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge and experience with relevant legislation including the Rules of Civil Procedure, Substitute Decisions Act (1992), Health Care Consent Act, Mental Health Act, Family Law Act, Powers of Attorney Act, Succession Law Reform Act, and Estates Act
- Knowledge and experience with relevant areas of law including guardianship and mental health law, real estate, estates and trusts, landlord/tenant, debtor/creditor, family, personal injury and social assistance
- Excellent oral/written communication skills, including interpersonal communication skills
- Ability to empathize and work with vulnerable persons and their families
- Excellent analytical ability in dealing with complex issues across a diverse range of areas of practice, and comply with strict deadlines
- Sound judgment
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to inspire client confidence and to work effectively as a team member
- Ability and willingness to travel
