The opportunity:
The Junior Energy Modeler role within the Custom New Construction Program is responsible for the review and analysis of energy models to help our clients assess the best ways to save energy in their new buildings or major renovations. Other responsibilities include performing site visits and providing support for other members of the Customs team. The successful candidate must have a working knowledge of energy analysis techniques, particularly around software-based energy modeling and building science fundamentals. Based on the current program participants, experience with non-residential applications and/or multi-unit residential is particularly desirable.
- Responsible for analyzing new construction projects using industry-standard energy modeling software (e.g., CanQuest/eQuest, IES VE, HAP).
- Responsible for performing energy modeling simulations and model reviews on basic project types.
- Responsible for working knowledge of the National Energy Cody for Buildings (NECB) Part 8 Standard and how it applies to energy models.
- Responsible for assisting with project agreement development and administration; ensuring compliance with established regulations.
- Responsible within areas of specialty (and within a team context), be responsible for ensuring quality and accuracy of technical work.
- Responsible for completing measurement and verification of energy-saving measures after the project is executed.
- Responsible for assisting with the follow-through on evaluator and verifier recommendations for the program.
What Will Help You Succeed?
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related field, or diploma in engineering technology or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
- Other relevant professional professionals such as Certified Energy Managers, Certified Measurement and Verification professionals, etc. are considered assets.
- Demonstrated experience using whole building energy modeling software (eQuest, HAP, and/or IES VE).
- The ideal candidate should have a working knowledge of building science principles related to the construction of commercial and/or multi-unit residential buildings.
- Proficient with all Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
- The ideal candidate should have excellent interpersonal and written communication skills.
- The ideal candidate should have the ability to prioritize deliverables and work independently.
- The ideal candidate should have a strong attention to detail.
What to expect in your first several weeks on the job:
In the first week, expect to:
- Work with the Program Manager and Project Technologist to learn standard program procedures.
- Read program documents including the Program Guide, eQuest project review guide, and others.
- Review examples of previous projects
- Meet colleagues from other teams and departments to learn more about the organizations.
In the first month, expect to:
- Begin to take on project reviews, with support from the New Construction team.
- Become familiar with and begin tracking New Construction projects in the Customer Information System (CIS)
- Learn more about team and/or department initiatives.
- Continue self-directed and peer learning to develop knowledge of energy codes, energy modeling best practices, and energy efficiency measures in new construction projects.
In the first three months, expect to:
- Manage new construction projects, including technical reviews of energy model submissions.
- Participate in the program evaluation process.
- Contribute to team/department initiatives.
- Work with your manager to develop individual learning/development goals.
