Job description


The Halifax Mooseheads are a Major Junior Hockey team in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and a member of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League (QMJHL). Founded in 1994, they have appeared in the QMJHL President's Cup Finals four times, winning in 2013, with the other three appearances coming in 2003, 2005 and 2019. They hosted the Memorial Cup tournament in 2000 and 2019 and won the tournament in 2013. As the premier sports and entertainment organization in the region, the Mooseheads boast one of the highest attendances in the Canadian Hockey League, along with a substantial TV, radio, and social following, and have produced numerous NHL draft picks and stars.

On behalf of our client, we are currently recruiting for a Business Development Manager to join their team of dedicated professionals in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Reporting to the President, the Business Development Manager will be responsible for identifying untapped markets/customers, creating and developing sales pipelines, and finding new business opportunities. The successful candidate will plan and direct all aspects of the organization’s business development objectives and initiatives. Ideally this individual will have a strong background and demonstrated experience in sales and business development in a B2B, B2C and/or professional services setting, particularly working with senior level decision makers. He/she will have a unique ability to build relationships and develop networks, along with highly developed account management skills. He/she should be curious about how individuals and teams perform at their highest levels, and eager to offer innovative ways to help bring new customers/clients into the organization.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Seek out and source new clients by developing networks, relationships, and independently identifying and developing relevant resources for sales and business development.
• Work collaboratively with the Marketing Manager to develop creative outreach strategies to attract and retain clients.
• Work towards sales and revenue goals as established in partnership with the President of the club.
• Identify and seek new sales channels, which include:
o Businesses
o Fans
o Families
o Organizations
o Events (Conventions, Cruise Ships, Charities and Non-Profits)
• Source and develop client referrals.
• Develop and maintain customer database.
• Monitor competitors, market conditions, and product development.
• Prepare sales action plans and strategies.
• Generate and qualify leads.
• Skilled in communicating effectively verbally and in writing.
• Demonstrated relationship with C level clients.
• Effectively use the company marketing initiatives and collateral (handouts, demos, other material) to engage new prospects.
• Ability to influence others in organizations through communication interpersonal skills.
• Knowledgeable and expertise in using a CRM daily to record and help track all sales activity, account management and prospecting.

Required Experience:

• Bachelor’s Degree along with 3-5 years of related professional work experience in B2B sales, sales in professional services, sales to HR and team leaders, business development in professional services, and/or client relationship management.
• A passion for and/or familiarity with hockey will be preferred.
• Exceptional relationship management skills and the ability to build and grow connections with people of all types and backgrounds.
• Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
• Independent critical thinking and creative problem-solving skills.
• Comfortable and confident using technology as an integral part of the sales process, with particular experience using the best CRM’s.
• Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to keep multiple projects and client engagements active at once.
• Skilled in creating vast sales plans that have a track record of success and are unique/innovative.
• Comfort with ambiguity and ability to navigate uncertainty.
• Style alignment with a strengths-oriented team environment and the ability to naturally elevate others.
• Interest in working as part of a small and growing company, with awareness about the opportunities and challenges that come with a highly adaptive environment.
