Within the context of a client-centered care model, in accordance with established standards of professional practice, and the vision, mission and values of the Saskatoon Health Region, the Staff Recreation Therapist works as a member of the collaborative health care team and provides Recreation Therapy services with specific clients and/or client groups. Patient safety is a priority and a responsibility shared by all SHR staff and as such, the requirement to continuously improve quality and safety is inherent in all aspects of this position. The Staff Recreation Therapist utilizes a strengths approach to practice with a focus on enhancing life-long leisure skills and attitudes, eliminating barriers to leisure and optimizing leisure participation for clients with chronic illness or disabling conditions. The clinical role and function of a Staff Recreation Therapist includes assessment, intervention planning, utilization of evidence informed interventions, evaluation and documentation of Recreation Therapy services. Services are provided to groups or individuals in inpatient, outpatient or community settings, relating to the client's leisure needs, interests and abilities and overall treatment plan. The Recreation Therapist is responsible to oversee the delivery of the overall Recreation Therapy service for a program or team and supervise Recreation Coordinators and Therapy Assistants where applicable. The Recreation Therapist works within the standards and competencies as outlined by the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
Job Qualifications Required Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree in Therapeutic Recreation
- Current CPR Certification
- Registered or eligible for registration with the Canadian Therapeutic Recreation Association
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities - Ability to collect, record and report comprehensive client information accurately in verbal, written and electronic formats in accordance with professional standards and SHA guidelines.
- Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with clients, families, inter-professional teams and community service providers in the development and delivery of safe and effective Recreation Therapy services
- Adheres to SHA policy, procedures and standards of conduct at all times.
- Current knowledge of community leisure service delivery system, disability resources and techniques for adaptation to equipment and activities
- Demonstrated ability to apply a systematic approach to solving problems, effectively resolving conflict and adapting to changing conditions
- Demonstrated ability to research and analyze Recreation Therapy theories and practices to enhance professional efficacy and contribute to the development of the profession
- Demonstrated ability to use a variety of interventions/programs to improve physical, cognitive, social, emotional and behavioral abilities and independence in life activities and leisure functioning
- Demonstrated knowledge and skills in Recreation Therapy assessment and treatment of individuals with chronic illness or disabling conditions
- Demonstrated leadership and facilitation skills to maximize therapeutic benefit
- Demonstrates commitment to ongoing professional development related to the field of Recreation Therapy, including fulfilling all requirements of maintaining CTRS certification as outlined by the NCTRC.
- Must be able to work independently and collaboratively within an interdisciplinary team, be highly motivated, organized, have excellent time management skills and ability to prioritize workload
- Possess knowledge and understanding of work with marginalized populations and an understanding and sensitivity to aboriginal and cross-cultural issues
- Requires coping skills to work with clients dealing with stress, role loss and other psychological issues.
- Requires initiative and sound judgement to plan, implement, evaluate and modify the treatment plan to meet the needs of individual clients
- Strong personal and professional commitment to health promotion and the ability to teach and empower clients to take responsibility for their own health
- Well versed in medical terminology and familiarity with the Health Information Privacy Act
- Working knowledge of computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point
Other Information - Preference for this position will be given to HSAS members in accordance with the terms and conditions of the SAHO/HSAS Collective Agreement. HSAS seniority within the Saskatchewan Health Authority will be considered under the Selection Criteria.
