The role of the Paralegal and Contract Administrator is to provide contract administration and contract management support to ensure that construction contracts are tendered appropriately, fit for purpose, constructed on schedule, within budget and in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. The Paralegal portion of the role involves supporting Legal Counsel with claims management, legal billing, and organization.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist Legal Counsel in management of claims, legal billing, and document management.
- Assist in the review of a broad range of complex and high value contracts.
- Work with Tenders group to receive and evaluate bids, prepare commercial/technical summaries and letters of recommendation leading to award of contract.
- Support Construction Managers and Supervisors by providing project specific contractual advice.
- Ensure contractor invoices are in accordance with contract terms and conditions.
- Participate in contract termination, claims, or dispute settlements according to delegated authority.
- Ensure that all matters pertaining to contract administration and contract management comply with Valard Construction guidelines, policies and procedures.
- Participate in Project Completion Reports to review outcome of recent contracts to ensure any learnings are captured and applied to future contracts.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Post Secondary training as a Paralegal preferred.
- Three - five years related experience (experience in a legal environment specializing in corporate law or construction is preferred).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Experience in the preparation and administration of contracts preferred.
- Experience with compiling and reviewing contracts preferred.
- General knowledge of current Office technologies, including email, word and spreadsheet processing.
- Ability to deal tactfully with clients and colleagues.
- Demonstrated experience in achieving goals.
- Strong understanding and demonstrated experience with tendering law and process, contractual law, development and execution, and terms and conditions.
- Excellent communication skills.
- The ability to think logically and analyze information.
- Good attention to detail.
- Computer skills including the ability to operate MS Office spreadsheets and word processing programs.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Learn, understand and apply new strategies and technologies.
- Customer Service oriented.
- Work both independently and in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
