The Carleton University Particle Physics Group in Ottawa, Canada, invites applications for a postdoctoral fellow position on the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC. The Carleton ATLAS group currently consists of six faculty members: Alain Bellerive, Dag Gillberg, Kevin Graham, Jesse Heilman, Thomas Koffas, and Manuella Vincter. The group typically has six postdoctoral fellows and approximately fifteen graduate students.
The Carleton ATLAS group was responsible for the construction of two forward calorimeter modules of the FCal and, more recently, for the assembly of the Small-strip Thin Gap Chambers for the muon spectrometer. Currently, the Carleton group is participating in the commissioning of the muon detector New Small Wheel (NSW) effort, as well as in the construction of the inner tracker (ITk project) through contributions to the radiation-hard thin silicon sensors and the readout electronics of the microstrip system. The Carleton group contributes to the physics exploration at the LHC, working on Standard Model analyses, emerging jet studies and Higgs physics. We are interested in candidates who hold a Ph.D. degree in experimental particle physics and wish to take a leading role in the construction, installation and commissioning of the new ATLAS inner tracker (ITk) for the High-Luminosity LHC. The successful candidate is expected to make leading contributions to the Carleton ITk efforts on the thin silicon microstrip sensors and especially to the on-going studies of radiation damage on semi-conductor devices, participate in test beam and irradiation campaigns and eventually play a leading role in the ITk integration and commissioning effort at CERN. Previous experience or work on ITk or on semi-conductor sensor R&D, will be considered an asset. The candidate will be given the opportunity to help with the supervision of our students and will also be encouraged to participate in physics data analysis. The appointment is for two years, with a possible extension subject to availability of funds and upon satisfactory performance. The position will be initially based at Carleton University, with frequent travel to CERN. In the second year of the appointment, the candidate will be based at CERN to participate in the ITk integration and commissioning work.
