Job description

Join the Ministry of the Solicitor General, Ontario Forensic Pathology Service, and apply your superior technical skills as a Histotechnologist in the Provincial Forensic Pathology Unit.

The Provincial Forensic Pathology Unit (PFPU) is the main autopsy service for the Province of Ontario operating under the auspices of the Ontario Forensic Pathology Service (OFPS). The PFPU performs approximately 6,500 medico-legal autopsies per year including all homicides and criminally suspicious cases in the greater Toronto area. In addition, the Unit acts as a referral centre for complex cases for other regions of the Province that do not have access to forensic pathology expertise.

What can I expect to do in this role?

In this role, you will:
• perform routine and specialized procedures in Histopathology in support of medicolegal autopsies
• organize work-flow to maintain performance standards of quantity and quality
• observe, troubleshoot and report problems with methods, equipment, etc.
• ensure cleanliness of equipment and work area; follow established health and safety procedures
• and participate in training programs.

How do I qualify?

Mandatory

Registered Medical Laboratory Technologist Certification

Technical Knowledge

You have superior technical skills to:
• prepare histological slides including preparation of reagents, solutions and stains.
• operate computerized laboratory equipment to fix, dehydrate and infiltrate with wax, tissue specimens to be preserved.
• operate automated laboratory equipment associated with microscopic slide preparation; perform standardized immuno-histochemistry techniques.
• You have demonstrated knowledge of laboratory practices and techniques relating to histology and of routine, complex and specialized staining techniques used to support medico-legal autopsies.

Analytical and Problem Solving skills

• You possess proven analytical and problem solving skills to identify and resolve issues or problems related to samples or equipment and to identify precautions to be taken in handling biohazardous materials.

Interpersonal, Oral and Written Communication skills

• You have demonstrated oral and written communication and interpersonal skills to draft procedures for processes and to work in a team environment.

Research and Time Management skills

• You can participate in internal research of new instrumentation, validation of methods and improvements to existing methods and processes and to ensure efficient work flow of assigned tasks.
