The Opportunity Are you an excellent, strategic communicator with leadership experience and a passion for helping build a community where everyone has a fair shot at a good life? We are seeking a creative and dynamic communications leader to join our senior management team. Reporting to the President & CEO, the Director of Communications & Donor Experience will build and strengthen United Way’s brand; develop and implement marketing, media relations and communications strategies that align with United Way’s mission, vision and goals; and prepare and lead the creation of compelling content while fostering collaboration across departments.
Location: London. In-office expectations. | Travel within Elgin and Middlesex Counties is required
Work Hours: Monday -Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. | Schedule is flexible to reflect meetings outside of regular business hours.
Primary Responsibilities Brand Management - Oversee brand identity, ensure consistency and coherence across all channels
- Ensure compliance with national brand standards.
- Use brand research to drive strategy
- Follow current events, trends and news media to understand changing demographics, emerging issues, opportunities and challenges facing the community sector to best leverage United Way’s impact
Media Relations and Communications - Develop and implement media relations plan; act as spokesperson when required
- Develop and lead the crisis communication plan
Marketing - Implement an annual marketing plan that aligns with strategic priorities and utilizes national marketing assets
- Develop and implement digital campaigns to engage target audiences, drive website traffic, and increase online presence
Content Creation - Prepare copy e.g., media releases, newsletters, speaking notes, social media
- Develop and coordinate video production
Metrics and Analytics - Analyze KPIs to measure the effectiveness of initiatives; provide reports and recommendations for optimization
Financial Management - Develop and manage departmental budget
- Secure and evaluate vendors
- Identify and solicit potential sponsors and gift-in-kind with interests related to marketing and communications strategies
Staff Supervision - Recruit, manage and coach department’s team members
- Lead cross-functional teams and projects.
- Provide management coverage to other teams when their leader is unavailable
Organizational management and leadership - Counsel management peers regarding communications and donor experience issues
- Collaborate with senior management peers to develop and implement strategic and operating plans
- Represent United Way at functions as needed
- Work with leadership peers to create, implement and evaluate policies and solve day-to-day challenges
- Collaboratively lead the implementation of the organization’s Reconciliation and Equity Plan by actively participating in learning opportunities and implementing anti-oppressive, and anti-racist learnings into action internally and externally
- Perform other duties as needed to ensure the safe and effective operations of the organization
Our Ideal Candidate Will Possess - University degree, college diploma or equivalent in a related field; or commensurate education and experience.
- Minimum five years experience in marketing, communications, and senior management.
- Experience leading diverse teams, including fully remote and hybrid staff.
- Ability to build team capacity by being collaborative, positive, inspiring, engaging, and outgoing.
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
- Experience managing and working with wide range of stakeholders, e.g., media, government, community, corporate, and labour sectors.
- Knowledge of board governance and working with a board of directors is an asset.
- Ability to lead by setting clear direction and translating strategies into goals, accountabilities and results-oriented action plans.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite, and digital marketing platforms.
- Knowledge of the non-profit sector and of relevant issues, preferred.
- Current clear Police Records Check and acceptable credit score.
- Valid Ontario driver’s license and access to a vehicle with a minimum of $1,000,000 insurance coverage.
