Job description

The House Mentor is a volunteer position.

House mentors live rent-free at Matthew House in exchange for volunteering to live communally with refugees. Certain limited staples and house supplies will also be provided for the common benefit of the house mentor and refugee residents, as well some funds for events. This volunteer is responsible for maintaining the community atmosphere of the houses. They are also responsible for assisting residents in maintaining the cleanliness of the house as well as the security of the residents. They should be present in the common spaces of the house as often as possible, but most often in the evening.

The House Mentor must be comfortable living in a communal setting where only their bedroom is private. All other spaces such as the kitchen, living rooms, and some mentors have a private bathroom, but some do not.

The House Mentor should be ready and willing to assist refugees in adjusting to their new life in Canada, but generally house mentors have other work or study commitments outside the home during the day.
