Key Deliverables:
- Provide and coordinate mechanical engineering and technical support to Algoma’s Projects department and Plant Operations.
- Ensure that mechanical engineering design conforms to applicable standards & governing regulations.
- Prepare and provide mechanical engineering drawings, technical documentation and reports.
- Carry out conceptual and detailed design, create Bill of Materials (BOM's) and perform calculations and equipment sizing.
- Take ownership of mechanical designs from a concept through manufacturing, assembly, installation, commissioning and sign-off.
- Participate and develop project schedules and cost estimates.
- Interface and coordinate with various engineering consultants and equipment vendors.
- Review vendor proposals, coordinate vendor presentations and site visits and prepare recommendations to purchase.
- Review, verify and approve engineering designs, drawings and documentation with inputs from project team members, operations & maintenance departments and engineering firms to ensure they conform to the project requirements.
- Prepare various technical specifications such as Project Requirement Specifications and Bid Specifications.
- Evaluate technical aspects of proposals, perform Kepner-Tregoe (KT) analysis.
- Provide liaison with construction trades & contractors, operations & maintenance, engineering consultants and equipment vendors to facilitate equipment installation, commissioning and start-up that will ultimately ensure vendor supply meets contractual requirements and project specifications.
- Provide technical direction to internal tradesmen and external contractors as required.
- Prepare purchase requisitions for mechanical scope and work in close contact with project planners.
- Collaborate with operations and maintenance departments and external vendors to ensure resolution of equipment related problems, implementing new systems and design revisions required for corrective action.
- Participate in the development and maintenance of Maintenance Management Systems (MMS) and Quality Assurance (QA) systems consistent with industry standards.
- Provide corrective action for recurring or high cost equipment and process issues requiring technical resolution.
- Maintain plans, specifications, cost and material estimates, subcontract and report in an organized fashion in accordance with company’s standards.
- Respond to mill breakdown situations when required.
- Assist in establishing technical standards of work performance, specifications and tolerances for equipment upgrades and machinery repairs.
- Coordinate and perform Pre-Start Health & Safety reviews and audits for engineering projects.
- Role requires frequent visits to mill locations and inspection of equipment or facilities.
- Climbing of ladders, stairs and/or working at heights and in confined spaces will be involved.
- Some overtime hours may be occasionally required.
- Attend technical and professional courses and seminars as required.
Qualifications:
- Must have a Mechanical Engineering degree.
- Must have relevant technical experience.
- Knowledge of and experience with AutoCAD and 3D engineering software.
- Have strong computer skills utilizing Microsoft Office Suite.
- Possess keen analytical and problem solving skills.
- Possess good organizational and communication skills.
- Have strong project management and technical leadership skills.
- Be a self-starter and able to work with minimum supervision.
- Possess good interpersonal skills and the ability to function effectively in a team environment.
- Have knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and Health & Safety practices and procedures.
- Knowledge of steel production and processes is an asset.
