Job Summary

The incumbent of this position is responsible for operationalizing content strategy on a College-wide basis including education, planning, and production of storytelling and media content through written, video, print publications, and/or other media. The incumbent supports media relations activities including coordination of media requests, assisting College personnel in media interaction (particularly involving news media), supporting media announcements, and meeting/exceeding key performance indicators. The incumbent also supports cross-College initiatives including the development of major publications principally as a writer and storyteller as well as contributing to College presentations, speeches, and related activities.

Specific Duties

Content Strategy
• Collaborates with Communications Services staff in implementing a content strategy related to CNC’s marketing and reputation needs and to connect with and educate leads and clients to maximize publicity.
• Works with program areas to seek out narrative storytelling opportunities (significant or newsworthy moments) and content that supports the brand and reputation of the College, while meeting or exceeding storytelling and media targets.
• Writes and/or produces stories into the most appropriate forms for media, marketing, publications, news releases, photography, and multimedia presentation (including but not limited to video, podcasting, website and social media). Accomplishes this objective through content meetings, developing creative briefs and project plans, as well as work that complements other communications and marketing strategies in the College.
• Ensures CNC content merges effectively with marketing and recruitment needs in support of strategic enrolment management (SEM) as well as the College’s overall content strategy and editorial direction.

Development & Writing Publications
• Supports the development of major publications in the organization including strategic plans, narrative content in marketing materials, internal communications needs, news releases, and other related materials. Work is typically focused on writing, proof-reading, editing.
• Provides support for and develops speeches, presentations, or related needs for College personnel at the direction of the Executive Director.

Media Relations
• Receives, logs, and documents media requests and supports relationship building and outreach to regional, provincial, and national news media or sector-specific outlets as required. May provide training support to media spokespeople prior to interviews as directed.
• Documents, and tracks key performance indicators with respect to news media activity.
• Provides logistical advice to the Executive Director with respect to news media inquiries.
• Works with Executive Office, Executive Director, Communications Services team, and program areas to support news media needs and coordination with respect to special events for, announcements by, and news conferences by the College, government, and/or external partners (donors, agencies).
• You will be part of a team actively engaged in contributing to and accomplishing the vision, mission, and goals of the College and in supporting the aspirations and needs of our learners.
• You will promote a positive work atmosphere by interacting and communicating in a professional manner that demonstrates mutual respect with students and colleagues.
• Other related duties as assigned by Supervisor.

Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree (or higher) specializing in Journalism, communications, or a related field or equivalent experience and education.
• Minimum 3 years experience in a news media, content generation, and/or strategic content environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills and an ability to communicate confidently across all levels of an organization.
• Experience providing strategic communications and marketing advice to internal/external clients regarding brand, messaging, tactics, channels, production, and design/creative with specific relationship to news media and content strategy.
• Ability to work independently and positively while meeting deadlines and managing changing priorities with frequent interruptions.
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work effectively with various departments and maintain a good working relationship with other employees.
• Proven ability to work with a demanding workload, changing priorities and continuous interruptions.
• Demonstrated initiative and good judgement.
• Reliable and punctual with strong organizational skills.
• Creativity to develop unique or adapt visual imagery for websites, publications, presentations, videos, and/or reports consistent with established visual identity, branding, and design standards.
• Strong decision-making, project management, negotiation, analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to write in a variety of formats, including newspaper columns, media releases, internal newsletters, program marketing materials, official reports, scripts for speeches, and website text.
• Demonstrated ability in proofreading and editing (i.e., outstanding grammar skills and experience with Canadian Press style standards).
• Skilled in all phases of digital, video and print production and experience developing/ following strategies to achieve defined objectives.
• Advanced computer skills, including strong Internet and research skills.
• Excellent demonstrated working knowledge of Microsoft Office suite as well as Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent video and audio editing applications.
• Fluency in social media platforms is an asset.
