Job description
As the Manager, Data Engineering, you will be accountable for managing the design, build, and launching of new data models, architectures, and data pipelines utilizing data engineering standards, design patterns and practices in support of overall section or department strategies.
In this pivotal role, you will be a member of a ground floor initiative ensuring the best possible combination of money spent and value received for Ontarians. Your expertise will play a key role in the delivery of the Data Engineering function, ensuring consistency with Digital and Data department performance measures, standards, and best practices and integration with overall organizational directions.
Other key responsibilities include:
- Managing the design, development, and maintenance of data architectures, and data models, ensuring data integrity, reliability, and availability for end-users and the development and maintenance of ETL processes to extract, cleanse, and transform data from various sources into a standardized format.
- Managing data warehouses and data lakes, optimizing data storage, retrieval, and processing efficiency.
- Implementing and maintaining data quality and validation processes to ensure high data accuracy and consistency.
- Providing Data Engineering expertise and advice to management and staff in response to operational or program issues impacting the achievement of department directions and providing evidence-based recommendations for problem resolution and improvement to methods to deliver programs or services.
- Managing the unit and its staff to support an environment and culture of service excellence.
- Working with the Director or Chief in operational planning, development and reporting on performance metrics, program effectiveness, risks and impacts related to unit, section and department matters.
- Supporting critical change and a new collaborative, forward thinking culture within the unit.
- Leading and/or participating in projects within the Digital and Data department to represent the unit’s interests in program or service decision making.
- Developing and managing relationships and consultation with stakeholders impacted by unit programs and operations to discuss and clarify program or service-related issues and needs.
- Working in collaboration with cross-functional teams, including analytics, data governance, and business stakeholders, to understand data requirements and deliver data solutions effectively.
Successful candidates will demonstrate the following:
- Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
- 8 years’ experience in data engineering, with a minimum of 1-2 years in technical leadership or managerial roles.
- Strong background in data modeling, ETL development, and data warehousing.
- Familiarity with data engineering best practices and emerging technologies on cloud.
- In-depth knowledge of modern data engineering development and design concepts; software development lifecycle; advanced and systems administration practices and principles.
- Skilled in database management systems, including SQL and NoSQL databases.
- Proven understanding of ETL tools and frameworks (e.g., Apache Spark) and skills in programming languages such as Python, Scala.
- Knowledge and understanding of cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS) and big data technologies.
- Exceptional leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide team members to achieve success.
- Demonstrated project management skills to oversee complex data engineering projects.
- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
